  • Don't try and be moneysaving with this - if the most expensive ones in the store are the ones she wants, then those are the ones she should get. It might make her feel a bit more 'nurtured' when she's feeling rough.

If she has a heavy flow (quite likely by day 2-3), then a zip up cosmetics bag with the aforementioned goodies, plus a spare pair of undies would be good - and accidents don't result in odour then.

Hmmmm I think it'll largely have to be dictated by her flow - no good saying small ones if she'll have to change them every 30 minutes.

When I started I had to use always - I've changed to bodyform as I find I can use a much smaller pad for the same flow.

I've just noticed these http://www.bodyform.co.uk/Pages/Products/Product.aspx?id=1353&productID=1346 - I know they're for strings but may be large enough, and are 195mm instead of the 240mm of the standard, always also do similar types? May be worth a shot?

You could try bodyform extra long liners

they're smaller than towels but very absorbent. i've used them when i've run out of tampons mid-period and they're really good, more absorbent than some towels in my experience

hope you and your daughter find something suitable for her x

big hugs to her ((HUGS))) i remember my first period when i was 9 co-incided with a birthday party at the swimming baths and my grandads death... so traumatic was an understatement - at the time there were only basic towels (that when you bought them from the local shop they would be put into a brown paper bag so no one would see.... very helpful when some boys from my school would always be near the shops!)

i used towels only for a long time, basic NISA press on ones... looking back - they were awful!! now i will only use always as they are the only ones i can find that stay put! and leave you feeling dry.

i do use tampons - but only occasionally (painful due to surgery scars and stomach problems) but will only use lil-lets as they expand in width only, hate how tampax get longer too! use to use own brand tampons (again widthways only) but i find they arent very strong and bend easily... (sorry TMI!)

i tend to wait til they are on offer though and buy them then so its works out fairly cheap. lil-lets do a mini tampon designed fo first use and light days...

i keep a little bag with a selection of both towels/tampons in and a clean pair of knickers - i did try those scented wipes once.... never ever again due to the reaction, i cant even use baby wipes (and wouldnt want too tbh - have you seen how easily then can remove paint from skin and brushes!) and i also keep a couple of disposal bags (99p for 50 from wilkos) just in case there isnt a sanitary bin in the toilets.

i love the little bodyform tins... but according to my nieces they are highly embarassing at the schools! god knows why though!

just remembered - have heard about mooncups also which seem to get good reviews... but i think there is 2 sizes, so if she is only little probably no good yet.
Please be nice to all moneysavers!

Oh, that brought back memories! The elderly gentleman that ran our local shop used to wrap them up in newspaper!:rotfl:

Oh your poor DD, she'll be feeling miserable with her braces then that goes and happens - sounds like it's time for some hot chocolate and a DVD of her choice from the rental shop.

I sometimes use towels at night and have found the Always without wings seem to be longer than the ones 'with' wings. I'd compare box sizes (when you're shopping without DD of course, she'd maybe be very embarassed by you going through the feminine hygeine aisle with a fine tooth comb) and of course they all have water drops on them to indicate what flow they're meant for. With towels it doesn't matter though, having a towel for heavier flow will cover all eventualities, you couldn't go up in flows with tampons due to TSS recommendations.

Buy a few and let her try them, and to be MSE just use the rest yourself!:money:

Please don't just consider towels for your daughter. I remember, more than 20 years ago, having to ask my mum to buy tampax for me because I absolutely hated towels. I remember showing her letters and articles from teen magazines to convince her that it was OK for a teen to use tampons. I hated towels with a passion from day one, and still do on the rare occasion I have to use them.

Have you seen on the bodyform packs at the mo there are tins that are discreet to put the towels in. Although my step sister and her friends now have such a collection it is their way of letting each other know when they are 'on' without telling. In fact one of their friends who hasn't started has been carrying a tin about because she felt left out x

No, i wont just consider towels for her, she knows all about towels/tampax and has said she wants towels to begin with.
I'm just going to go along with whatever she wants.

My dd is 11 and she uses asda's freestyle teen towels. They do a daytime one and a night time one. x
