Hi Gabycat, I would not presume that because she has just started she has light periods and therefore only needs something light. I was 12 and was very heavy so I would suggest a range, light to heavy so she can figure out whats best. Poor thing, what a trauma she's having at the moment.

Size has nothing to do with what your periods are like (so long as you are healthy, as of course being under- or overweight can affect them). I'm not much bigger than your daughter!

No but if she's wearing knickers sized for 9 year olds, she won't necessarily be very comfortable or even be able to fit a "normal" sized pad. OP probably wasn't expecting her to start until she'd "developed" a bit, girls usually start growing boobs before their periods start.
OP it might be worth looking online, there might be some specialist websites that sell a better range?
Good luck and hope her first one isn't too awful.

I would ask daughter how she felt when she had her period. whether she could actually feel it coming from her or whether it was like a stain on her pad. to start off with periods can be very light - sometimes its just a like a bit of spotting (in which case panty liners would be ok - or it could be heavy, when they may need an 'adult' type pad). also whether there was any discomfort or cramping. your daughter wont know if HER periods are normal - its up to you to judge that. but at her age I was using the super pads.........had bad pain.....clots of blood and it took nearly thirty years before I was diagnosed with endometriosis because my mum just supplied some of HER pads, and thought I was making a fuss about nothing. later on my doctor thought all women suffered during periods and it was just something women had to put up with! NOT!
I hope your daughter has normal periods and congrats to her - as my mum would say, she is 'now a woman'!

I had the exactly same dilemma with my daughter a few months ago, Always and Bodyform towels were far far too long for her.

I asked in Boots if they had a teenage range, they didn't, but they did suggest Tena Mini Pads (expensive, but a great size for a small girl). She starts off with Tena and then moves onto Bodyform Panty Liners towards the end of the period.

There is definately a market for a teenage range, but I haven't found anywhere who stocks them so far.
  • Each of my girls that have reached this stage have had varying comfort/success with different products and as each monthly occurrence is also different, something thin one month, may be less suitable the next.

If you haven't already, find the free samples at the company websites.

Every girl is different but all mine prefer wingless. I'm not sure if that is common, but it really is trial and error.

I'm old ;) but I prefer wingless - I find the wings rub and irritate me. I don't like Always either because I find that material that they're made from really itchy and horrible.

I can recommend the Bodyform with the tins they sometimes have with them (as mentioned by another poster). I'm sure there was a similar thread to this on here a while back where someone mentioned that their teenage daughter and friends were quite proud of their "tins"!!

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

I'm sure I have seen in asda that they sell their brand of towels (freestyle) that are aimed at teens. I have never bought them myself, just seen them when getting my own.
Maybe they are shorter and not as wide as normal ones?

As a side note I would recommend asdas freestyle towels instead of always if you shop at asda. For me they were just as good as always but cheaper. Though having said that I now buy Tescos own brand of slim towels because they are as good as always and asdas freestyle but even cheaper (and usually on offer)
:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:

    Hello OP,
My DD - aged 14 and definitely bosomy - only started last week! Mind you, I was the same age when I started. I'd begun to think it would never happen at all.
Don't worry, your daughter will cope fine.
I gave my DD a great book called, "Bits, Boobs and Blobs" after it was shown to me and recommended by some girls in a Year 5 class I was teaching at the time.

    Rant alert...
I've noticed that some companies are giving away scented "intimate wipes" with packs of sanitary towels.
***Everybody, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE think carefully before using these or giving them to your daughters****
It's a rotten idea to use anything scented on your "bits" and it also promotes the idea that women don't smell good.
Careful washing is all that's necessary.

    Rant over.

    Thank you!

I'm old too and luckily i've never had to personally deal with this. Maybe I should wear one sometime to see if I'm missing out :rotfl:

My girls don't have tins and I'm not aware of any craze, but it made me chuckle:o
