and i can't find any suitable towels for her.

I had what i use in the house (always, tampax) we went to Tesco to get her own , but it was either Tescos own or always.

I remember when i "started" there was bodyform and they had bodyform minis, have looked online at boots and they have bodyform but not the minis.

Anyway, my question is , what did you get when your girls started their period, and where did you get them from?

P.s my poor girl just got braces fitted yesterday, and started periods today any ideas to make this easier on her greatly appreciated

  • Congratulations to your daughter on her menarche! (And how great that she can tell you- I plucked up the courage to tell my mum during me second period, I wrote it on a post- it note!) I had some normal towels, I think, wrapped in a smelly ('fragranced') cover, that I'd been carrying around for months before I actually started. I also had mini tampax, though I don't know whether they still do them. I've just googled and found likeitis.org, which has info for teenagers.

I think it's whatever you can find for now, and let her work out what works best for her. Tampons/ towels/ menstrual cups etc. Welcome to womanhood!

  • You're absolutely right, there aren't any 'mini' towels around. I remember looking for my daughter who was only 11. We just used Always ( without wings so no one could see!)

I bought a few packs in advance and let her 'experiment' with the different brands, towels and tampons. Maybe you could buy a variety (finances allowing)?

I also got my daughter a great book about periods, written by a 15 year old and her aunt and I know she read it a few times. Its 'The Period Book' by Karen and Jennifer Gravelle.

    HTH :)

My mum gave me some of those slightly old-fashioned giant thick pads that she used. Don't even bother going there, they were useless and were terrible for me. You could get her a pack of pads (ones with wings stay in place easier which can be handy) and a pack of tampons, then she can practice in the privacy and comfort of home and decide what she prefers. Any of the brands will do to get her but women do generally develop a preference and end up sticking to one or two brands. Try a few different brands or types, not all at once but just when the one pack runs out, buy a different brand for the next pack. I notice you specifically mention what pads should she have, it is perfectly possible for her also to use tampons if she would like to.

Have you asked her what she wants to use or try using? It is likely she may have considered it before.

    Thank you, that's what we got tonight from Tesco. {TBH that was all there was}

She is still a wee bit worried everyone will know, but ive said you don't know when i have my period, so why would anyone else know when you have yours

I cannot believe there is not a range for young girls, because we are all young when we start and anything to make it easier must be good.

Might have a wee rant to bodyform, always etc by email tonight.

Hang about, you might not even have to have mini towels (and they might just be selling panty liners for these now). My first few periods were quite heavy until they settled down a bit. I'm not too sure HOW you would know, but do you know what her flow is like or can you speak to her about things like that without her getting embarrassed and refusing to discuss it? That will then at least narrow down the choices to Regular or Super ones etc.

Oh, and as for helping her feel better, I know she's just got braces but how about sticking a big bar of chocolate in the bag with her sanitary products? Alternatively a cheapy DVD or some other small treaty thing like that. Don't make a massive fuss! :rotfl:

ETA Too slow, you've got something. Why does there need to be a young girl range though? They have the same periods as older girls and women. The only problem I see is that the choice can be baffling and overwhelming, but then it can be at any age for any product.
  • This is a stupid question here and you may not know but and this may be a bit TMI of a question but......

How much do they actually lose when they first start?

If it is not a lot and doesn't last for long can she not try panty liners? - they do come in slightly smaller sizes and are obviously thinner than normal towels etc
