    Hi

I have just bought a slow cooker at Tescos today the 3.5l one for £10 (in reality was free as used £22 of MOC's on my shopping:D ) but now wondering if it really was a good one to get. I have tonight been trawling both this site and others looking into slow cookers and nearly everything I have read says to put it on the low setting if say putting it on for 8+ hours and the high setting for around 4 hours. But this one says "high is the normal slow-cooking setting. Cooking time is around 7-8 hours." Low - "Can also be used for heating up cooked food."

Does anyone have this model and know if it is correct, or would I be better taking it back and getting something else.

    Thanks Kathie

    Quick question -

Am doing a beef stew in my SC, and want to do dumplings. How long before I serve do I put the dumplings in, and do I need to turn it up to high to cook them? The stew will be on low all day.

I put them in for the last half an hour of cooking time, and turn the slow cooker up to high.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Kathie,

We purchased one of these yesterday and it is currently sitting on the worktop in the kitchen cooking lamb shanks :D . We put them on at 10 am and they will be ready for 4 but we will have them at 5. So far so good, I think from what I have ready from other peoples comments that its just a case of keeppracticing :)

I too bought one of these yesterday and was quite worried when I read the (v small!) instruction leaflet that it says cook on the high setting and only use the low setting for heating up food.

I cooked a sort of spicey veg and bean casserole today (just bunged loads of stuff in!) and set it going on high, after an hour is seemed to be bubbling quite high so I turned it to low and bubbled away nicely for the next 5 hours, so not sure why the manufacturer says don't use low for cooking but it seemed fine to me today.

Thanks for replying. Also to RustyFlange as well. I was a bit worried that I had made a mistake in getting this one and was thinking of taking it back, but might actually get it out and give it ago now (well tomorrow!) I know someone else on a craft forum got one of these yesterday, and she too said that on high it seemed to be bubbling away a bit too much.

    Thanks again both of you

    Hi Kathie,

We had ours cooking the lamb on high til approx 3pm this afternoon, then turned it down to low and we ate just after 6. The lamb shanks were perfect and just fell off the bone! When on high it did bubble a fair amount however not excessively! on low is barely bubbles at all. Give it a go, I am sure it would be fine :)

I've just ordered the slow cooker from Amazon that was on the Grabbit board last week (temporarily out of stock and price now gone up so I'm hoping I'll still get it at the lower price as per their order confirmation email). I'm patiently waiting for it to come back in stock and be delivered.

Anyway, lamb shanks sounds delicious. Where do you get lamb shanks from? I can't say that I've ever seen them in the supermarket. And what else do you put in the slow cooker?

    Thanks for any advice.
  • Have just bought a bargain tesco slow cooker for nine quid in an effort to cut back on wasted food and have warm food waiting when we come in from work.

Was going to attempt chicken casserole in it tomorrow but am paranoid that I might burn the house down or end up with a lot of wasted food.

Instructions that come with it say things should be cooked on high and kept warm on 'warm'. Would I be okay to leave a casserole on high for around 10 hours?

Also how much liquid do I need? would hate to frazzle everything or destroy the kitchen!

Any replies would be very gratefully received, am altogether too excited at the prospect of using it tomorrow and don't want to look like a fool in front of hubby!!!

PS - Any fab slow cooker recipes would also be brilliant!

What settings other than high do you have? 10hours on high is a bit much - I do 10/12 hours on low or auto but only 4/5 on high. Oh, and you won't burn the house down - its absolutly fine - I've got used to it now but I was nervous at first and only started using it when I could pop home at lunch!

Bought one myself and the instructions are a tad limited to say the least. I've come here to have a look through the old style collections of recipes. Usually they're in the top bit above the list of threads. Usually loads of tips for everything there.

going to attampt a 1.4kg chicken tomorrow....once I find the right bits that is.

Settings: High, warm and low. From what I remember.
