Nessie - I love doing beef stew in my SC. I do it at least twice a week and have a bag of frozen red wine cubes in the freezer just for that recipe!

Pink - Thank you! It's already in the slow cooker now, so I guess I'll just see what it looks like when I get home. :S I won't kill anyone by doing a quick transfer to the oven at 6pm if it isn't done, will I?!

(Sorry for being so clueless at this. I read lots, but putting it into practice is my downfall!)

Of course you won't kill anyone! Lamb is a meat that can be served rare so I'm sure it will be lovely! :D Hope they all enjoy it.

    Hi all.....

I have a MR oval 3.5l slow cooker.

I want to buy a chicken at lunch time to cook in it.

What size chicken is likely to fit and does there have to be gap round the chicken at all or can it be a very tight fit?

Also - how long do you cook a chicken for in a SC - on slow or medium? :D

    All replies gratefully received!!! Thanks

  • I have bought a reduced half leg of lamb from Mr T but can I cook it in my slow cooker instead of roasting it???? Also picked up a turkey drumbstick, can this go into the slow cooker, not at the same time obviously :rotfl: If I can cook them in the slowcooker what do I do/add?????

If you can make it cheaper do so. If it's not reduced, in Primark, off ebay or free I can't have it

    Hi pandaonmyshoulder,

This thread should help with the lamb:

    lamb joint in slow cooker

And if you look here and here there are recipes for turkey legs in the slow cooker.

I'll add your thread to the slow cooker quick questions thread later as your query may help others.

I have cooked a 3lb chicken in my 3.5l slow cooker. It helps to have a bit of breathing space I think because you want the meat juices to flow within the meat and not to have it squished into a funny shape :)

A tip - chicken gives off a lot of water, esp the supermarket variety that are injected with water to make them 'succulent'. It's a good idea to sit the chicken on scrunched up balls of tin foil to raise it a little from the juices.

I have medium and high settings and I put mine on high for 3 hours. On medium I would estimate 5 hours. Do the usual tests - meat thermometer into thickest part of thigh and breast/and or insert a knife into same and check that juices run clear.

I wouldn't recommend putting any joint or whole chicken on and leaving it all day (as you might with a casserole) as you CAN overcook chicken and other meats. But when you get it right it is delicious!

    Quick question -

Am doing a beef stew in my SC, and want to do dumplings. How long before I serve do I put the dumplings in, and do I need to turn it up to high to cook them? The stew will be on low all day.

I have just borrowed my mum's slow cooker to see if I use it much before buying my own as I use a Remoska for lots of cooking.

I would like to try a rice pudding in the slow cooker but do I just put it in a bowl and put it in the SC like I would if cooking in the oven and how long would I need to cook it for? It would only be a smallish pudding as there are only 2 of us.

I've used veggie sausages for casseroles in the past but would like to use meat ones now, is there a best type to use? I'm doing my online grocery order atm and am overwhelmed with the choice of sausages.

Can anyone recommend a sausage? :D
