I do beef stews/casseroles but only keep the sc on for 8 hours then it automatically goes on warm. I find that 8 hours is plenty for a casserole as the beef is diced, so not a big piece to cook. No idea about the chicken, but it shouldn't take longer than diced beef, and I also think that 10 hours is far too long.

My sc only has the following settings: slow cooker mode, rice cooker mode and steamer mode. Plus keep warm, and timer. I just put it on sc mode for 8 hours and then it goes on warm. Great stews!
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • Thanks guys, should have looked more closely and realised there was a low function! Will give the casserole a go on low tomorrow and see how it turns out. Will be sure to check out the slow cooker recipes thread too!

Sounds like at minimum its bung a chicken in the slow cooker and let rip. Think I'm going to add a few carrots and some water to the bottom though as well.

    Hi newbienortherner,

There has been some discussion about the tesco slow cooker on the Slow Cooker Quick Questions thread so I'll add your thread to it to keep the ideas together.

I've just ordered the slow cooker from Amazon that was on the Grabbit board last week (temporarily out of stock and price now gone up so I'm hoping I'll still get it at the lower price as per their order confirmation email). I'm patiently waiting for it to come back in stock and be delivered.

Anyway, lamb shanks sounds delicious. Where do you get lamb shanks from? I can't say that I've ever seen them in the supermarket. And what else do you put in the slow cooker?

    Thanks for any advice.

Hi Kem, we picked them up from Tescos, they were £4.79 for the 2 which is quite a bit but well worth it. OH just added some vegetable stock (from a stock cube) then added rosemary, some bay leaves and something else but can't think of the name. We did all of the veg in the steamer as OH likes crunchy veg :)

I am new to slow cooking and I am trying my dab hand at a sausage casserole today, admittedly I have cheated and bought a colman's mix packet but the liquid isn't covering everything in the pot is this ok? or do I need to add more water? :rotfl:

    Thanks!

  • it should be fine - i regularly leave mine all day with the food not 100% covered as I find it makes a really sloppy sauce

I agree it will be fine. Because steam from the slow cooker doesn't evaporate as it would in normal cooking the food normally stays moist.

I'll add your thread to the slow cookers quick questions thread as your query may be helpful to others.
