To thicken up something in the SC that's too runny, I sometimes use the 'slaked cornflour' (cornflour mixed with a little cold water to get the lumps out of it first) like Skint_Catt, or some cheapie powdered mash (usually Smartprice).

  • Right quick question! I want to do sausages in the slow cooker tomorrow, will it be ok if I put in sausages a splash of red wine and some onions?

Normally I just do cassorole with gravy etc, so i want to try something different!

    Thanks

I would brown the sausages first before putting them in the SC (otherwise they will remain the same pale insipid colour as when they went in).

    I usually add:
finely sliced onions (you can 'sweat' them first to soften them up a bit)
crushd garlic (sweated with the onions)
some sliced or quartered button mushrooms
some sliced peppers (red and green if poss for added colour as well as taste)
    tin of chopped tomatoes
    mixed herbs
    teaspoon of paprika (optional)
    teaspoon of chilli powder (optional)
stock cube and a little boiling water (or you could use the wine instead of water - but not too much as you don't want the final meal to be too liquid)

If by any chance it is a bit too liquid you could add a little 'slaked cornflour' (that is mixed with a little cold water to a paste to get rid of any lumps) and give it a good stir.

I have been known to use a tin of ratatouille when short of veggies, and sometimes use a pack of sausage casserole mix instead of the herbs, spices and stock cubes.
