  • Mmmmmm, my kitchen isn't that warm as the radiator in there is bust. I'll put the soup in another saucepan and am now just wondering whether to go and put it outside somewhere!! As I live in the sticks the top of my wheelie - bin looks a likely place (to keep it out of reach of rodents and other nocturnal visitors  ).

at least my slo cooker didnt object to there being an extra mouth to feed whereas he did. hasten to say i still have the cooker and not the husband lol
  • I have a MR 3.5l Slow Cooker.

I never know how much liquid to put in the damn thing!! Their instructions say a litre, other books I have read say 1/2 a litre.

This morning I put in diced potatoes, carrots, swede, onion, sausages and mushrooms then about 1/2 a litre of stock. Can I get away with less? and does meat such as sausages and chicken have to be covered in a liquid or is it just the root veg, as I woild like to try a condensed soup as a sauce.

Sorry for 20 questions but I couldn't find the answer on the slow cooker thread, and I have my leg in plaster for the next 6 weeks, so using this is easier so DH can just dish up when he gets home from work.

I asked exactly this question when I made stew. I also got several different answers, but settled on "enough to cover the veg". (I was told to put the meat on top of the veg, for reasons I don't pretend to understand. ;) )
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • Thanks for that. I did put the meat on top of the veg but the gravy was very watery. So will try less next time.

Ahh...well...apparently you're meant to thicken it with flour when you get a bit nearer the end. ;) Add some cold water to a little plain flour, and make a smooth paste. Then bung it in and stir.

Or you can remove some of the veg, blitz it with your £4.99 stick blender from Morrisons, and then put that back in. I've not tried this myself, but I can see that it would work. trink04.gif
