    I've never read a SC leaflet :D

I cook things for about 7 hours on low or 4 hours on high... I've never used the warm setting!

Not sure that i've helped but I suppose all you can do is try and see. 7 hours on high seems a lot to me...

BTW mine are both from tesco, small and large. Do the same cooking times for both.

  • Hoping against hope that someone can help. I was given a Tower slo-cooker back in the late 70s as a wedding present. The little booklet which came with it had a recipe for Sweet & Sour Spare Rib chops which was absolutely delicious. I still have (and use) the slo-cooker but the booklet is long gone. We're having a 1970s themed dinner party this week, & I would love to make this meal so if anyone has taken bettercare of their booklet than me I'd be immensely grateful. The recipe included spare-rib chops, crushed pineapple, soy sauce, brown sugar & I think sherry - all good, healthy stuff! Thanks a lot
  • Hi SHENNAGH I still have the book!!!!

    Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs.

    75ml Soy Sauce
    210ml/7 1/2 can rushed Pineapple
    150ml/1/4 pint Sherry
    15ml/1 tablespoon brown sugr
    1 clove garlic crushed
1 kilo/2 1/2 lbs Spare Ribs of Pork
    Seasoned flour to coat
    15ml/ 1 tablespoon cooking oil

Combine the first 5 ingredients to make a sauce. Dip the spare ribs in the seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a large pan and brown the spare ribs all over. Drain off surplus oil. Add sauce to the spare ribs in the pan and bring to the boil. Transfer to the slow cooker and cook for

Family de luxe cooker High for 3 - 5 hours or low for 5 - 7 hours.
Auto Cooker High for 4 - 6 hours or low for 5 - 7 hours.
    Compact cooker 4 1/2 - 9 hours.

Don't know which model you have so I've included instructions for all of those listed in the booklet.

Hope you enjoy if you decide to make it again, Cheers Lyn.

You might get a copy of the booklet if you contact Tower, worth a go!!!
  • Thank you so very much!! I used to make this as a newly wed when we had friends round & feel very sophisticated. We hadn't got as far as fried rice or noodles though - served it with mash & green beans It was a favourite with everyone, I hope with changing tastes it still tastes as good. I've been looking all over the internet for the recipe or to buy the book, for the last fortnight with no joy, I'm so glad I stumbled on this forum & really grateful for your help. The only problem now will be finding crushed pineapple in syrup rather than juice! Thanks again.
  • SHENNAGH - I think Princes still do crushed pineapple, if not get a tin of pineapple in syrup and blitz it in the food processor, that would work just as well, Hope that helps, Cheers Lyn x.

I've used my slow cooker for the first time and have a few questions. I'm currently trying out meatballs and sauce.

    1) I've left it a bit late to put on for today's tea and the sauce will have had about three hours and the meatballs about 2 hours 45 mins on HIGH. Is this long enough to cook the meatballs thoroughly - dont want food poisoning!
    2) If the sauce isn't thick enough after 2 hours should I leave the lid off after an hour or should I use cornflour to thicken it?
    3) should the slow cooker smell when switched on? Apart from the obvious food smells? Currently it's got a kind of dusty smoky smell eg like when you turn on hair straighteners..it has been in a cupboard for a while.
    4) Should I expect the sauce to be bubbling whilst it is cooking on HIGH or will there be no bubbles?

    Thanks in advance

    1) Depending on the size of the meatballs I'd give it a go, but check before serving
    2) Leaving the lid off to reduce the sauce takes aaaaaages - use a thickener
    3) Mine doesn't smell - so give it a good wipe down when you've finished with it
    4) Bubbles on high

    :)
