  • I've got a curtain track attached to my front (very badly fitted rented property door) there's a long thin lined curtain up there with an older thin curtain behind and it's still not preventing the draughts from getting through. Really peeved and going to have to put somesort of third lining up, some how.

I'm sitting here with the living room door open so I can here my little girl if she wakes upstairs and struggling to keep warm. it's ruining the warmth of the whole house

Hello all, I've really enjoyed reading all you hints and tips it's certainly got me thinking.

However as the nights are getting a bit more chilly now, I think all I am going to need are some cloths to dry the bedroom windows in the mornings.

Every year when the overnight temperatures drop to around 6 celcius or below, every morning we have rivers of water on our bedroom windows and I can't get an explaination as to why.

We have double glazed windows, and our house does not suffer with damp - it doesn't feel too cold either. But it seems that the moisture from our breath condenses on the bedroom windows overnight, and between now and about March I shall have to add wiping/drying windows into my morning routine (I have 2 young children this is no joke)

I air my house, and allow air to circulate at night. As I said before we don't have a damp problem, the moisture is coming from us - I don't think holding our breath all night is really a viable option.

I've got someone from the window company coming next week, I want them to investigate why the inside window panes seem to be as cold as the outside ones (the seals aren't compromised as there is no condensation between the glass).

I'm at my wits end about this, it just makes me want to cry.
Does anyone who might be reading this suffer the same problem? If so what have you done about it? Can anyone suggest what it is we are doing that we shouldn't be or possibly not doing that we should.

    Thanks
    L x

We have this exact problem! I'm very interested in finding out the answer

lutzi1 big THANKS JUST RESERVED LAST ONE NEAR ME

Glad you got one, muffin man 7!
    Hope is not a strategy.
  • I think i remember reading a while ago, that condensation such as this can be because of your insulation. I'm sure it said that the insulation material in the loft, should have about a 6-12 inch gap round the edges, to allow the property to "breathe". If not condensation could be one of the problems.

Now as i have the memory of the gold fish i could have this totally wrong, but may be worth seeing if there is any information out there, to [STRIKE]prove me wrong[/STRIKE] see if it's true!

  • wyntyr, I didn't believe it happened to anyone else. Certainly doesn't seem to happen to any of the other houses round our way.

Alisonpennypincher - I'll have to get DH to check the position of our loft insulation. I think I'm at the stage I'm prepared to try anything. I always thought that the double glazing was supposed to provide insulation, but with the inner panes seemingly getting as cold as the outer ones I can only assume there is something wrong with my windows.

Yayyyyyyyyy I found the posh camping gas stove I got years ago in case of powercuts.... its still all shiny and new looking... Only used it once! Just got a nasty feeling about this winter so I have taken it out, checked it works, put it away in an easily accessable place so things should be a big more comfy if we do lose power - I will still be able to make hot meals for me and the kids :) and the neighbours too if they need it :)

Bought a wind up lantern too - says it will last for 30 mins after a 1min charge.... lasted 2 hours! I am so impressed.. My friends think I should get a life LOL!

Still haven't found the elec blanket but my bed is super snuggly still so I have time :)

Got a few more supplies in as i haven't been spending so much after mealplanning :)

Still able to open windows for much of the day but close them around 2pm so the house doesn't get damp.

You have a life - and you plan on living it - not constantly worrying and not coping when crap happens.

I want to get all sorted this year so when the snow comes I can play ALL day in the snow with my kids on their sledges

Exactly my reasons - last year was awful, totally unprepared and didn't enjoy a single day of it - this year will be different and I WILL be able to enjoy (well try to make the most of) it because everything will be organised :)
  • I have been thinking of how I am going to warm up my porch. The front door doesn't fit properly but I am hoping LL will fix that once I speak to them on Wednesday - the bottom catch on our pvc front door has snapped so it only catches at the top and middle one good kick and it would go! But I digress!

The front porch has a paneled front door and a 4ft Glass wall to the right of the door (floor to ceiling) and I know that once the weather starts chilling off it is gonna get cold in there. Anyone got any ideas how I can hang curtains in there? I was thinking of a curved rail.
