Preparing for winter II

Every year when the overnight temperatures drop to around 6 celcius or below, every morning we have rivers of water on our bedroom windows and I can't get an explaination as to why.
We have double glazed windows, and our house does not suffer with damp - it doesn't feel too cold either. But it seems that the moisture from our breath condenses on the bedroom windows overnight, and between now and about March I shall have to add wiping/drying windows into my morning routine (I have 2 young children this is no joke)
I air my house, and allow air to circulate at night. As I said before we don't have a damp problem, the moisture is coming from us - I don't think holding our breath all night is really a viable option.

Hi Lizzybop,
It's exactly the same in our house, you know autumn's arrived when the windows start fogging up and we have to clear stuff off the windowsills so they're easy to wipe dry.
I like the window open a bit in our bedroom, but DH hates it and usually shuts it if he gets the chance. It's too cold to have the windows slightly open in the boys' bedroom and DD's so every morning after they've gone to school the house is like a fridge while I open all the upstairs windows to let fresh air circulate
Please let me know if you find anything out from your window man lol!0 -

Although I obviously have far too much to say about thermals
Rubbish, if it is useful to anyone you can't have said too much.:D
And that was interesting and useful to me. :TPut the kettle on.0 -
If you have an M & S outlet , they have the thermals for £5. I bought a black sleeveless vest , but they had short sleeve , long sleeve and long leggings in white , cream or black. Nearest to me is Springfields in Spalding , Lincs but not sure how many others there are.0

when does everyone close their curtains for eve?
i close mine at dusk, but am wondering if there is any benefit of closing them sooner,as although still light outside, theres no direct sun on any of the rooms at the front of my house, would this help to conserve any accumilated day heat?? or am i going nuts??:rotfl:
i should say that the rooms in question are the lounge and ds1 bedroom,so not usually used til after dusk.0 -

I was thinking the same thing and mentioned it to DH and he said we would then end up putting the lights on as I have such think, heavy curtains... dont think it will make a diff to the electric bill.
I got up this morning for work about 7am and it was FREEZING I am on earlies next week so going to have to be up at 5.45am  and dreading how cold its going to be.... do I give in and put the heating on??? I just dont know if i can face actually getting out of my warm PJ's into a freezing cold bathroomGoal - We want to be mortgages free :j

sorry to ask another possibly silly question, does any know if there is any merit in making curtains or blinds for my glazed internal doors? 2 are part glazed, the other fully.
2of the doors are off my v cold unheated hallway, and glass does seem to get cold.
and if there is a benefit to making something, which side of the door would u hang them??0 -

I haven't done it myself but I think it would be worth putting up a curtain if the doors lead to rooms that you are heating as they'd help keep the heat in. I'm not sure what the best way of doing it would be but I'm sure someone else will now.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

hi
I have about 10 thermal tops some bought this autumn and some bought 23 years ago:eek: but all our plain not patterned (although the older ones are a plain grey now:eek: )
My recent purchases earlier this month were £1.99 for a long sleeve thermal top and £1.99 for plain thermal trousers from Mountain WareHouse..... but they are bright pink which is not my normal colour of choice but for £1.99 i was persuaded...
DH got some too - but the mens version are black but the same price...
All my others are M+S, plain white or black....the 23 year old tops were bought by my mum for me when i went to Polytechnic in the North East - i refused to take them as they were not very glamorous - but once the winter took hold in Newcastle i was soon begging mum to post them to me.... and i was converted to the joy of thermals top and bottom. I wear thermals for about 6 months of the year now under T'shirts and waterproof trousers when working outdoors at the farm.. I also always take my black M+S thermals on campingholidays and wear them as PJ's...even in August (we only go away in the UK)
At 46 with 2 small kids, working outdoors, and OS ways the days of glamorous underwear are behind me. Maybe OH will find my new fuschia ones very glamorous.. i had better go and get them on..
