You can make a REALLY tasty meat and potato pie with a tin of corned beef, potatoes, carrots and onions, chuck in a stock cube and a bit of water, marmite, tomato puree, whatever you've got in the cupboard to add some extra flavour and boil a bit, then bung a bit of pastry on top and bake. Ooh, I'm feeling hungry just thinking about it....
Aye, that sounds well good,as a camper for over 40 years (too old now though:() I can cook on anything with anything.
My hubby thinks I can make a meal out of two stones and a stick.:rotfl:
I was a young housewife in the 70's winter of discontent, strikes, shortages and roaring inflation were very good teachers, never thought I would be treading that path again though.
Best to all

I need to stock up on the cold medication. We all have new slippers kids and DH, mine from last year still good. Went to primart and got new thick pj for the kids and a pair for me.
My bed socks are fine and the kids vests are good from last year as i brought them the large size up.;)
Just need to make a draft roll for lounge, as its blowing a gail
Tonight is the first night i have my heating on due to it been cold and my little bobba been poorly and we drove to three different places to get his prescription. I will slowly do my spares tinned food over the next few weeks.
Great ideas everybody:T0 -
Well I gave in and turned the heating on as it was that cold earlier this evening. I'm hoping I won't needed to have it on in the mornings til mid-October, but we'll see.
Thanks for the info re thermals. I have a few from last winter, but the M&S ones look like worthwhile additions to my collection. The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -
those honchos look fab! what size would i need do you think, im 12/14, i was thinking med. thanks for the link.
Honchos are brilliant our whole family has one each and we have a couple spare, ( got some good deals on bulk buying at festivals)
The sizing works best on height, I'm about 5" 8 and the med comes to about my knees, just the right size, the small works out great if you are about 5" 5, and my dad at 6" 3 has a large.
We use them as extra covers on the beds in winter and for camping and festivals there is nothing better.2 adults 4 children Eldest 14 yrs old youngest 1yr old,

Today, (well yesterday now actually) I bought a couple of packs of scented tealights from Ikea, also a single bed quilt to go under the bottom sheet on DS bed and another of those sola lights. The one we got last week seems quite good for reading in bed and has charged up fine so far.
I do have some spare quilts that I found after having bought new one today but they are very musty smelling. Don't want to wash but will hanging on the line get rid of that smell or do they need cleaning? Can't wash in my machine and taking them to be cleaned wouldn't be cost worthy I don't think.Second purse £101/100

bbbrrr.well wasnt it chilly last night!
first time ive worn my winter coat ,and had to wear my pjs in bed last nite too(not with the coat:rotfl:)
was glad id layered up bed with spare quilt, but need to do boys beds as well now, with a fleece under their bottom sheets.
extra think curtains seemed to keep lounge warm, need to re address dining room as it was really cold,so will be taking a trip to the loft to see what other curtains are lurking around.
need to get some more furry draught strip for door between kitchen and corrugated roofed single bricked wall playroom,as playroom becomes one big spare fridge from oct to march!! may have to put oil filled heater on out there soon:( ch NOT going on just yet!!!
hope everyone is snuggly and warm this morning,or at least, planning to be snuggly and warm!0 -

miaomiao, salt doesn't "melt" snow. Salt is not hot. It does not give off heat.
While I agree with everything else you say - isn't the word melt used to mean the transition from solid to liquid, obviously that is usually through heat application but not always
As to salt, I'm definitely buying a spare pack of cooking salt this year, I assume it keeps forever if it's dry? We don't use much but we nearly ran out last year.
Also which is the most effective salt for icy paths? dishwasher salt, cooking salt? cat litter even? (by effective I mean most melty and/or cheapest)

not the cat litter!!!
as id read of this last yr i used i on our courtyard, worked great UNTIL the temp rose, ice melted and turned the solid cat litter back to clay......
add two small children, some wellies, and u get clay covered carpets that took me forever to clean up and i needed to borrow a pressure washer to get it off courtyard tiles......
it was NOT fun! or mse as had to shell out for carpet cleaner and extra water useage on meter.
lesson learnt.......salt and shovels it is!0 -

It might be worth signing up to their newsletter as they regularly have offers on(£20 off down jackets & £10 off fleeces right now) and the heat tech does come up!
I have five of the heat tech tops because they're so cosy and are a nice slim fit for everyday wear. I tried wearing one in summer around the house and I was boiling!
Their jeans are also very comfortable, and this is coming from a jean hater
And their knitwear if fabulous. And their coats. And leggings....Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
**ADVICE NEEDED!!**
Ok last night was really cold and I put on the heating, my bedroom curtains are lined and tucked up onto the window sill (so the cold doesn't sneak out underneath!) BUT my room was still chilly because I just can't beare to sleep with the window fully closed! I know that sounds completely daft but I feel like i'm suffocating and wake up with a headache if it's shut - my DH even sneakily shut it at 2am one night thinking I would never know, but I woke up with a thumping head in the morning.
Any way of keeping warm WITH ventilation?0
