Hey Nuala!!
Thanks everyone for a really interesting day. I started reading this thread sometime this afternoon and have finally finished .......... I really enjoyed last years thread too and have found that I have already done a lot of the things and so they dont need doing again this year (so pleased with myself on that!). Last year I found the radiator reflectors to be HUGELY BENEFICAL and cheap too since I made them myself.
I have spent a futune on ebay buying bit towards preparing for winter.... I now have a RAC windup torch on its way, a pair of slipper boots, a snuggle fleece blanket and some dylon to dye my thermal sheets to match the rest of the bedding. I also have bids on a hand knitted hat and scarf set (I would love to be good at knitting but I am just not!), two hand knitted cardys and some walking boots .... Its going to be a cheap couple of week in terms of food lol.
I love battening down the hatches but hate being cold. I just cant cope with it. Tommorrow I will dig out all the things I put away in the airing cupboard and then next week I am going to sort out curtains and rugs as laminate is sooo cold.

My bedroom is not heated, it is South facing so if the sun is out that warms it, otherwise it's just residual heat from the rest of the house. Poor DH get's a bit chilly now and again, but he says i give out so much heat he soon warms up too!
I went to a friends house friday evening, she had heating on and i came home sweating! Woke up yesterday with a bad head as i had got too hot and stuffy!0 -
You have all inspired me to start sewing some thick warm curtains for my daughter's bedroom, which does get chilly as it has 3 external walls. I am using some reduced duvet covers for the fabric, which will look very designer and match her room nicely, sheets for linings (avoids joining widths) and interlining with some thick curtain fabric I have in the cupboard to add weight and warmth. Hopefully that and the fact we had our builders use some left over Kingspan to line the roof over her room will mean she'll be warmer this winter!Hope is not a strategy.0

I am only half way through this thread and not come across this question. Can anyone recommend where to buy economically:
Hooded long dressing gowns for adults and children.
Also:
We are in rented and all the windows and doors have those pole and ring type curtain rails. This leaves huge gaps between the wall and the curtain on all sides. Does anyone have any advice on how to stop the drafts? Where the radiator is underneath the window the heat just goes up the gap. We sit the curtain on the window sill where possible but it is not always possible and also quite unsightly (though not of huge importance when cold).
On a 'tip' side I have used quite successfully in another house the plastic you can stick over windows and make taught with a hairdryer. My only complaint is that the tape sometimes gives and you have to fiddle to stick the plastic back on. Also if paint work old then when pulling the tape off in summer it takes the paint off too. Extremely annoying. As at: [STRIKE]9/6/10[/STRIKE] 15/9/10

I bought some thermals yesterday from a place called store twenty one. They're not patterned but are ribbed and kept me nice and toasty in the evening along with my fleece PJ's, fleece socks and big boot slippers
.
I bought the long sleeve one for £5, and the body part of it is quite long so I could tuck it in.0 -
