Preparing for winter II
Comments

Boiler serviced this morning so that's one more thing off the list.
Feels like winter already here today.Am half way through knitting a scarf in some lovely hand spun wool I bought earlier this year. I'm a bit behind with the knitting, quillting etc as my first grandchild is due next week so have been knitting baby clothes non -stop since the spring.0 -
Have been reading last few pages and its good to hear that people are ready for winter. The wind certainly took my breath away, but we prepared on Sunday and battened down the hatches, so it was only my bean poles that blew over - and they were at the end of their life.
I am definately NOT putting the heating on until October - I've noticed it being a bit nippy in the evenings once the children are in bed, but I'll get out my woolly cardigan to last me. We're in N Yorkshire and haven't seen any frost yet - and I don't want to either. Would be nice to leave the heating off until half term, but thats at the end of October! Have enrolled the children into some after school clubs - cheaper than heating the house (!!!) and will make sure that they go to bed with warm tummies, but am determined to keep heating off!!
Must see about getting another wood store. off to browse.......Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -
Tugrin - deicer - your screenwash bottle will give you the dilution rates for summer and winter, the deicer is already in the screenwash. Anti-freeze - well it used to go in the radiator but maybe modern cars are different. And the washer bottle with brown stuff in it may be brake fluid so best to get someone to give you a definitive answer. Your library may have a Haynes Manual for your make and if your car has all its handbooks there should be the relevant info in there too."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

The weatherman on tv said to expect a 'light' frost tonight. Crikey! Was only 11deg this morn in car too with more wind and rain expected by end of week.
I think this weekend I shall hunt for deicer as I remember the price going through the roof when the snow hit last year.
Hope everyone has a great day:A
frost already?
welcome to the board ziggy, i'm in fife too and not looking forward to frost so early... though maybe the grass will stop growing, that would be a good thing to it turning colder :rotfl:
think i'll make up those thermal curtians this weekend, thanks for the heads up!0 -
Have just "installed" my hm radiator reflector. I'm not particularly convinced it is going to help much, but the extra insulation on that wall probably won't hurt and I did it for the cost of 1/8 of a roll of foil, so I guess I'm not out much either. Hopefully the sum total of all of my efforts will add up--between the extra hot water bottles, curtain linings, blankets and a little bit of determination maybe I can manage to save the equivalent of the gas rises...I dare not hope to save more!0

Chimneys swept today
Winters on it's way:j0 -
Be of good cher Fairy - you will notice a difference if you have done draughts, fleece linings and got cosy blankts!! I just kickmyslf that I didnt think of this site last year with this threads ancestor!! I have already noticd a big diffrenc between inside and outside temps and although I expect that the gap will get smaller as winter progresss I feel confident I am losing less heat now - You will too!! Do the bubblewrap thing too Im sure it is making a diference in DDs room plus it gives her a bit of privacy from rather creepy neighbour.
Has anyone tried doing a bit secondary glazing with perspex/acrylic? The handle on my bedroom window sticks out a bit from the frame so Im not sure that the window film thing will work , so I thought I could maybe do a sort of temporaroy frame thing with the acrylic.debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
Almost finished making my first double sided draught excluder which matches the beige carpets both sides (bedroom and landing), and have made the beige (landing) half the second, now just need some blue fabric to match the bathroom side so am going to look for a bath towel/sheet, or even a toweling bathmat, in the cs's.
I have to say I'm quite impressed as none of it is sewn, the upholstery fabric I used is far too thick to get a needle through so I'm using iron-on hem webbing. Didn't know I was so creative!0 -
just wanted to say a huge thank you :Ato whoever mentioned the 22p pasta from MrT - I have looked several times and finally got 4 packets today - that should see me alright for a good while. I would not have known without the OP and everybody mentioning their searches - i added it to my list and kept checking and today is the first sign of it.:A:A
I see MrT also has their tins of Christmas sweeties in as well - would be nice for being snowed in with but they wouldnt survive that long here even though I am diabetic!!!:rotfl: I might buy the half price boxes of thorntons as I dont like them and they are very useful presents at the last moment - I will be in hospital again about 10 days before Christmas so these would handy in case I havent finished shopping or its too nasty to go out.
I am getting some money for my birthday next month so I am thinking of putting it towards a sewing machine to make some bits for the house - curtains cushions etc and maybe some gift stuff too - it would be great to be able to alter curtains etc I used to sew so it would take me a little while but i think i could do it - any suggestions regarding what kind of machine would be very welcome.
or would i be better to use the money to stock up for winter and make sure I have boots etc?
what do you all think?
toots xxPeace will be mine
could do better - must try harder
