Has anyone made their Christmas cake yet? Think I may make mine at the weekend, as I suspect I may end up being very depressed! Got a test drive on Saturday morning and depending on how it goes, I may be alot poorer on Saturday evening!A smile costs little but creates much0

I'm gonna attempt my 1st ever Christmas cake next week. I found an old recipe in my late MIL's house when we were clearing her home after she died.
Just to share, here's the recipe:
1lb of mixed fruit
4oz stoned raisins
4oz cherries
soak above in 1/4 of brandy or medium sherry for 3 days
6oz dark brown sugar
6oz margarine
rind of 1 lemon
rind of 1 orange
3 eggs
1tbs of treacle
2oz blanched almonds
4oz plain flour
2oz self raising flour
1 level tsp mixed spice
150 Celsius (gas 2) for 2 hours
135 Celsus (gas 1) for 1 hour 15 mins
I'm dubious about the temperature! Do they sound OK to the experts out there!?0 -
Sound fine to me, a rich fruit cake needs a long, low temperature cooking time so it doesn't burn on the outside and stay raw inside.
Good luck with the cake, sounds scrummy.

My blinds arrived today :j from Amazon.
BUT!
I thought they would have a draw cord to pull the blind up in the mornings, but they don't, you tie them up instead. This isn't a problem for four out of the five windows I will be putting them on, but the bathroom window is high and above the sink and I can't reach it. Do any of you clever ladies who have bought these blinds know how I could turn one into a draw cord blind, please? If not I'll just have to keep a stepladder in the bathroom - there's no way I can have the room in darkness for the whole of the winter, I would go stark raving bonkers. We don't get enough daylight as it is!
ETA Gave up on my nightshirt last night and am back in pyjamas, no more bare legs in bed, autumn must be here!Aspire not to have more but to be more.

OK, have bought my 90" x 90" thermal linings from Dunelm. They're to go with eyelet curtains as I've said before.
Have no sewing machine and can't possibly handsew them due to neck and shoulder problems:(
Would I be best adding extra rings to the curtain pole and attaching them to these using the header tape and curtain hooks (so that they hang behind the original curtain inbetween the eyelets - hope you know what I mean) or could I wonderweb the lining and the curatins together.
Thanks:)0 -
before i start putting together my new homemade thermal curtains i have a question...
this year i am going to put a layer of wool blanket, possibly some bubble wrap and i thought i'd ad space blanket. my question is, having never used space blanket before where layerwise do i put it and which side faces inside the house
do i put it first (closest to inside) then bubble wrap then blanket (closest to window) or what? or which way do i use it if i don't use the bubble wrap?
i'm going to seriously cheat, i'm going to pin everything together including the header tape with safety pins :rotfl:it'll all be up at the top so no one will see the tiny glints of silver poking through here and there, how lazy/clever is that
now i just need to figure out the order of things, i have a big 50m roll of 600MM small bubblewrap coming, got the space blankets, just got a gazillion safety pins in various sizes, have the blanket and duvet covers/sheets for the fabric so i'm nearly ready to go
my head is full of a touch of cold so i'm thinking a bit slower. weird feeling i haven't had a cold in 2 years! oh well better to get a wee one now and up my immunity before cold season hits in earnest i suppose.0 -
Ok, i'm sure i posted this morning but I can't find my post :rotfl:. I did post from my phone (laptop now in electical heaven) so god knows where its went.
Went to Costco last night and stocked up on some things.
Spotted some Kirkland shearling boots (looked like Uggs)that looked so cosy. Think i'll pop back for them. They were £36.
Going to order Boots for the LO from M&M direct today. Also need to call Littlewoods to query a missing order. Must also return jacket and reorder.0 -
