Preparing for winter II

I got my snow shovel from ebay last September. I saw Piers Corbyn of Weatheraction was forecasting a cold snowy winter - he's quite similar to the chap on Exactaweather ie he looks at solar activity, except he does it as a commercial thing so he doesn't give much information out on his website. And his paid for forecasts are VERY expensive. But the papers usually quote him when he does a forecast. I don't think he has said yet what he expects this winter to bring.
Anyway being forewarned I went looking for a shovel and they didn't have any in any of the garden centres. Since then I've found a garden machinery supplier which sells heavy duty stuff for country homes and small farms and they have them so worth looking in yellow pages to see if you have one near you. The ones they have in stock seem very good quality so I will buy one.
But the one I got from ebay was fine if not maltreated. Which it wasn't because I can't physically handle it if I try to scoop too much snow in one go. I had a second one, slightly smaller, which I lent to the neighbours clearing the drive to the flats opposite. Two beefy chaps and my snow shovel broke. I think they were using it like a spade rather than a pusher and it isn't meant for heavy stuff. So no way am I lending them another! They were supposed to replace it but I think snow is not uppermost in their minds. It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Hi,
Been lurking on here soaking up all your good ideas, love the fleece/cushion idea & it gave me an idea, have four fleeces on back of sofas & chairs & four empty cushion covers sitting in airing cupboard hmm guess what I'll be doing in a bit. Daft thing is the two fleeces for our bed actually live in the oxford pillowcases that decorate the bed during the day. Am now off to look for snow shovel as I don't remember seeing it in the shed earlier. Keep up the good work ladies xSometimes not moving backwards is as much an achievement as moving forwards is on other times. (originally posted by kidcat)
It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!0 -
These look good, has anyone got one? Probably not that thick but much neater than the scruffy fleeces that are strewn across my sofas ready for the dog to roll all over! Have ordered a couple to see what they're like (7% back through Quidco and you can often find codes for additional money off/free delivery)

Thanks Eliza:D
Have just ordered 4 of the cushions (2 for home and 2 for our caravan), 2 of the blanket thingies with arms,:rotfl:the frying pan with scewers for kebabs for my halogen oven and a few other bits.
We should be toasty warm this winter, as DH double insulated our loft and the hatch as well.
:T
I coughed so much this Febraury just gone and it was so cold, that I cracked a rib.
I don't plan on having a repeat performance.;)Felines are my favourite

Hi, it was me who suggested the notepad! There was a list somewhere, and a 'car survival kit list' ..
I posted a car survival list on the old thread... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

ok OH is finally going to do his HGV class one test very soon and will hopefully be on the road day and night by the time the snow comes (we have been waiting ages to get this done). Anyway i was wondering if anyone had experiences of how cold it might be sleeping in a cab, and perhaps what he might need in the winter. He has already given me a list of things he will need like sat nav and kettle so need to prepare now i guess and spread cost with anything left over each monthMe, DD1 19, DS 17, DD2 14, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/19

Thanks for the original link Eliza and to ifonlyitwaseasier....I've now got 4 snuggies and two booklights coming my way. I've been looking for them at a decent price and colour
As my dad always used to say 'Just because you've got the money doesn't mean to say you have to spend it all at once'0 -
The fan has arrived! Now I need cold weather to try it out.0

For the winter, my ex used to take a camping stove and a few tins of soup, beans, irish stew etc; biscuits and home made cake (in tins), snacks like penguins, bottles of water or cans of soft drink; he took fresh fruit but was often on the road for a whole week so he liked a couple of tins of fruit to top up; obviously he had a quilt and pillows, also a hot water bottle but don't think he actually used it. He'd eat a proper meal when he had the chance but his emergency supplies were invaluable and not only during the bad weather. He wasn't a reader but had loads of music tapes to while away the hours!
Modern lorries are obviously much warmer than the ones I remember but in the 80's my brother was stranded in his old lorry and had to be lifted from the cab when rescuers found him, he was very close to hypothermia, so don't underestimate the dangers.
eta he obviously took the usual toiletries and change of clothes plus extra sweater and thermal socks... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

First time I am posting on this thread eventhough I read all the posts. I just wanted to say thank you to those who have inspired me to start washing and dry winter coats and jumpers outside. The first coat has been done now!
The only thing I could add to that, is that last summer when it was 30+ degrees outside I impregnated jackets to be water proof and hanged them outside in the sun rather than using the tumbledryer and it did the job for us.No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up.
