Preparing for winter II

We have lots of snow ... well not by Mardatha's standards
but there must be about 20cm, maybe more and we are still having regular snow showers.
I've just been out to rig up homemade feeders for the birds and I put out some water too.
I was going to make a snowman but the snow isn't sticky, it's very powdery and dry so I gave up on that idea for now! It's just so beautiful, I love it! :jTrying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

i was researching electric heaters and a lot of people say that they all cost the same to run technically
BUT was told oil filled hold their heat a bit longer after switched off as the oil holds the heat - i have a small one from Netto and i beg to differ it goes cold minutes after switching off >:( so i don't think it makes much difference
i just don't like convectors and fans as the hot air smells funny lol
Stay cosy!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

I was just thinking how this is nothing compared to what some folks cope with. Was listening to something on World Service about things not shutting down some place in Russia till it gets to -50C! And I watched a Laura Ingalls Wilder film - they had some hard winters to contend with.

Today the back of my house is decorated with icicles! Good job my living room is at the front, where it's more sheltered.0

One is a fleece and 1 is a soft shell jacket and both are wind proof, they are brilliant.
I think it must be really cold outside as my poor chooks try and run indoors everytime i go out to them

Hi shegar
Mine have a covered run attached to thier house but it is small at 9ft x 4ft so my girls free range everyday. i do usually let them indoors for about an hour but some of them then terrorise my poor indoor duck :o.

I know what you mean about the air smelling funny .. . I always find that too and I think even this borrowed oil-filled one does too. Could be my imagination though.
Stay cosy!
oh i know what you mean, i only notice that normally when i haven't used a heater in awhile the smell is odd. still the heater woudl fill a need i asked on the electric forum about the heaters and this is the response http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=39005392&postcount=2 which i thought explained the differences in heating styles fairly well. i think i'm going for the halogen there is on on sale at argos for 18 quid, seems reasonable and if the reviews are right it's very bright so i can turn my room light off when using it, kill two birds with one stone
speaking of lights, does anyone have any idea if using led christmas lights are cheaper than an energy efficient bulb (standard size/wattage)? we've taken to leaving ours on and turning off the lamp as i much prefer the white light but i'm curious how much it's costing me, i know leds are supposed to be cheaper than standard fairy lights to run and that's about all i know0 -

well i suppose it's all relative to what is normal in ones area. it's so easy to get complacent and then suddenly get slammed with mother nature. i don't care who you are, mother nature ALWAYS wins, best one can hope for is a draw:p
i'm from the northern part of the midwestern states and so i'm accustomed to far worse weather in both winter and summer than anything i've encountered in the UK however years of living in a hot southern state then coming to the UK and being here 11+ years have softened me, it's really about what you're used to, the body and eventually the mind will acclimate as long as you've got enough resources to get to that point!
i read all the laura ingalls wilder books when i was 8 and yes they did have very harsh winters, incredible amounts of snow and not a lot of anything around them to keep it from drifting. they didn't have central heating or insulation or double glazing etc but they managed. like i said it's all what you get used to.... i think the human body is capable of some pretty amazing feats as long as the mind attached to it is determined to get through!0
