Preparing for winter II
Comments
-
Tomorrow is the day - I have decided.
I am going to drop my DD2 at school and I am going to come back and attempt to put the curtain rails up over the doorways all by myself.
This isn't our house (rented), so I feel a bit nervous about drilling into the walls (the possibility of making a mess see)
First time I tried to use the drill (a few years ago) took me 5 holes to get a toilet roll holder on the wall PMSL:rotfl:
Anyways - the weather is getting colder, and hubby is working hard at his job so it falls to me - so DIY Donna will be getting up tomorrow!Donna
Economy; careful management; providence. Whether you call it thrifty or frugality it all comes down to getting more for your money.0 -
I had a chap come round tonight to fix the broken curtain rail in the sitting-room.It's a complicated wire rig-up stretching from one wall to the other.I'd tried to fix it myself, but didn't manage.
So the winter curtains are up and it really makes a difference. The room feels less cold, even without the heating on.He didn't charge that much either.
I've just looked outside,it's snowing heavily!Snow forecast for the next five days as well.Glad I've got a day off tomorrow.0 -
Well I'm sorted for winter boots, just got some Hi-Tech walking boots for £35. Tried to get DD the same ones in her size but they'd sold out so she's got some other sensible soled ones she can wear for school which were the only ones in her size in the BIG shoe shop
Now I just need to get little things done around the house, including arranging to have our new carpets fitted (hopefully next week) and we'll be sorted. Roll on getting the loft insulation installed tomorrow, looking at the forecast we're going to need it :eek:Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
Regarding boots I have the answer - but it doesnt come cheap! I too, have this problem but it is compounded by the fact that it is just my calf that is big so if I can get them to fit the calf and they are too big round the top. There is a company called Duo of Bath who do made to measure so they will fit large calves and wide feet. They have been my saviour. That said I also found some in Clarkes as they have started doing a wider fit too. In relation to the practical side I believe the blue hunter wellies are a wider fit but as mine are some cheap blokes ones from the market I cannot confirm this.
After listening to everyone talking about their boilers breaking down etc I am pleased I have my wood burner. It's chilly today but I am toast! Tomorrow will be a different story as the carpenter is coming to fit the front door!!! But being able to letch after him will be worth the cold!0 -
Thanks redlady, I did see all the negative reviews on the internet for duo so decided not to try them as I had a bad experience with one scamming, made to measure, boot co in Bath. This was last year and it was a company that changed their name a lot. I had to bring my bank in to get my money back. It was called the fittedbootstore then

also called thebootmakers.com
I might be wrong but0 -
Snow here again today, and it`s unbelievably cold, well into the minuses.
For wellies, in an emergency you can insulate the bottom of the boots by flattening socks and putting them in the soles, or if you have insoles, remove them and place some flattened, folded tinfoil under the insoles. I always buy wellies one size bigger so as to get two pairs of socks on in them.
Have also put parcel tape around gaps in the window frames (could`ve blow dried my hair standing in front of one of em!) and chopped deadfall wood for the fire to supplement the peat. We can only keep one room warm so may as well make it a good and warm one.
Easy enough to wrap up, I guess, but what worries me is the low temps, as I have to work outdoors and no matter how well I`m wrapped up, breathing that cold air makes my chest hurt.
I also can`t work with gloves on, so what I do is take a hot water bottle out with me, and soon as my fingers go numb, warm my hands on that, though it cools rapidly in the cold!
This feels like Siberia, waaaiiillllll......"Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
Hi Kittie...I can confirm the shop actually exists as I have been to it in Bath. It is a fairly high end shop ( you see loads of ladies that lunch in there!) But I know there are others who claim to do the same as Duo or have a similar name. I will have a nose for the link for the proper shop. I have two pairs of boots from here and found their service to be good, but then that was through the shop. http://www.duoboots.com/ M & S seem to have bigger calves too this year. Perhaps the companies are beginning to wise up. Hope you got your money back ok.
Red Doe...I do not envy you at all!!!0 -
Hello all
Can anyone recommend any good boots for snow / icy weather?0 -
I finally have winter boots! My mum picked up some aldo leather riding boots in an x-catalogue shop for me, apparently a dodgy batch where the calf was far too narrow so reduced by 80%. But they just about fit with room for thick socks :j
I'm at a complete loss on how to heat this bloody place. Today my room is 7C, it can't be insulated!! Half the roof is slopey attic and I can't think how to insulate it just a little!
Cover the roof in tin foil or some sort of foil?Could do a mini experiment in my kitchen to test out the theory!
Bubble wrap?
How about shredding up the blob of insulation in the cupboard and sticking it to the back of posters then sticking the posters up?
:rotfl:
help meee, i'm losing my marbles due to cold!Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0
