Does the bubble wrap leave marks on the window? It's brand new double glazing so don't want to ruin it. Well the grey is a chimney breast and lines on the right are shelves in the alcove created and on the left it's a chest of drawers :D

rhiwfield, that sounds like a better way to do what I want to do. Would be wonderfully cheap and simple but I'll have to ask the landlord about the screws, there are lots of cracks around (in the paint or plaster below? idk) and don't want to make another haha. Spring loaded curtain rod or some crazy suction cups? Hmmmm

Is it just me or does anyone else not feel like doing any housework when it is this cold and you don't have the heating on in any other room other than the one you are in?

I had to force myself to do last nights washing up earlier and that was only after I had put the oil filled heater on in the kitchen.

    Brrrrrrrrr!

Heating going on in an hour so that the house will be warm when my daughter comes home from school.

We have a smart meter from British Gas that shows how much energy you have used/are using and the cost. We had the central heating on for a couple of hours in the morning as usual yesterday but on for a few hours later in the afternoon and it cost just over £3. I can fully understand how people can't afford to heat their homes when it would cost perhaps twice as much as that per day if you had it on most of the day (ie pensioners, sick etc).

An electric blanket or throw would help to keep you warm if you cant heat the room. They dont cost much torun and direct heat is much better for keeping you snug in drafty room.
What's the usuall wattage for a blanket? I don't mind being in bed with ahot water bottle while I'm doing something, but would love a little heat in the room.
I can heat the room by 3 degrees and within an hour of turning off the heater it's dropped back to what it was before.

No you're not the only one. I don't even have any heating on in this room and my nose and fingers are very cold - it's just over 13.5c in here atm, but the heating will go on at about 4pm. I'm a bit reluctant to put the heating on because when money arrives from MIL in SA we are hoping to buy a house, and I don't want to use up all the oil in the tank and have to fork out a few hundred pounds to get more if we run out of it, only to have to leave the oil behind. So we are trying to last on what we have.

Netto have oil filled heaters on offer today at £14.99 if that is of any use as a standby.

I have just found this site, www.raintoday.co.uk which gives you up to date forecasts.

Not sure if it is of any use to anyone or not, do any members subscribe to it?

It does say if you are a premium member you can get 5 minute updates, it does cost £2.99 a month but I suppose it could be worth it if you do a bit of travelling and you can pay by Paypal.

Not much use to me as we don't travel far except to Anglesey every 3 or 4 months.

I do have some loose change in my Paypal account so may give it a try for one month if the snow does start as we are going to Angelsey for Christmas.

Sadly we don't have a Netto. I look with envy when people talk about the savings they make with places like Netto, Aldi and Lidl. We have Tesco, the Co-op (I don't know what people find to buy in that shop!) and Shoprite. No independent greengrocers either. :(

Food - cereal bars, chocolate etc
    Drink - anything!
Warmth - blanket, hat, gloves, extra socks
    torch
    high vis jacket/band/anything!
    cigs if he smokes :D

    optional -
spade - to dig out of snow
salt/sand/grit to put under tyres to get a grip or pieces of old carpet

That covers the basics I think :)

    HTH

As the temperatures are now around freezing, it might be worth checking the pressure of the air in your tyres before setting out. Mine were down a noticeable amount this morning.

Every time the outside temperature drops 10 degrees Fahrenheit [5º C], the air pressure inside your tyres goes down about one or two psi. Drivers should check their tyre pressures frequently during cold weather, adding enough air to keep them at recommended levels of inflation at all times.

lol i got mine last night, haven't tried it out yet because i got totally lost trying to find netto and then find my way home :rotfl:

so when i got in i really couldn't be bothered to set it up in the livingroom... just fed the fish made some hot chocolate and jumped into bed with the bedroom's electric heater on :p but it was such a cold night last night, even with the heater on and warm clothes and a thick duvet and blanket it took me forever to 'thaw out' lol

then my daft boyfriend who was out that night came in and then fell asleep in the freezing living room for the night - what a fool!!!!! He came down this morning like a block of ice - he said he didn't want to wake me up bless him, I don't even know how he slept a wink there all but one of the blankets are in the wash too!!

I think Kittie subscribes to that website... I am sure she mentioned it a day or two ago.
