One good thing about burning candles - if the flames start flickering you should be able to tell whereabouts in your room the draughts are coming from as the flames will then start flicking away from the direction of the draught

I have bough some rubber seal from Lidl (£1.49, bargain) and have done all the doors and windows. Am amazed at the big gaps I had before, now the doors shut tight!

Have also superglued the draught excluder as it had a split in it, not that it made a huge difference but another small job done.

Have bought DD 2 flanette sheets for her bed (Lidl again, £4.99) and am now looking out for ours. We have a double bed but as we have a very deep memory foam matress the doubles wont stretch to fit so am looking for a king but our local Lidl hasn't stocked them.

I love candles too, think it is mind over matter as seeing a flame seems to make you feel warmer as its cosier haha!
  • Up till a year or so ago I always used to have a couple of candles going - I used the big fat `church candles` and they seemed to last ages. Can`t get the same ones now, have tried others but the ones that last well are much more costly - cheaper ones gave up well before they got to the bottom, so false economy. I have a corner uplighter now, and the log fire, so it`s cosy enough.

I got some Betty Crocker candles yesterday - thought they only did cake mix! - so now got the lounge smelling of cinnamon, smells lovely and cosy..
At least the fish fingers are still frozen, that's what I keep telling myself (Truly Madly Deeply)

I checked my papier mache filler around my outside plumbing hole and its worked a treat. It isn't damp at all and has stopped a shocking draught into the kitchen...

There was me thinking it would be a hell of a job to fill it but papier mache (newspapers mashed with PVA glue) has done the job a goodun :D

    Very pleased :)

Went and bought our winter boots today  A lot of money for 3 of us...

When I had the IVF and joked about wanting twin girls, I had no idea that girls boots cost so much!

I think I am in for an expensive time over the next ?? years!!!!!

Economy; careful management; providence. Whether you call it thrifty or frugality it all comes down to getting more for your money.
  • I've read about using candles to take the chill off a room and a while ago when we had a cold spell I decided to try it. Just a thought for some maybe you would be better off using something like these http://www.marksandspencer.com/Autograph-Small-Metal-Lantern/dp/B001THU83W?_encoding=UTF8&categoryNodeID=43670030&node=55115031&mnSBrand=core&ref=sr_1_1&qid=1288569335&sr=1-1&rh=&page=

I know 15.00 is dear but I picked up similar lanterns from B&Q end of season for £2 each and taller than those in the link.

Reason I suggest this is because you have the metal to hold onto the heat from the candles...working similar to a radiator. I tried both way and greater heat was had when using candles in my lanterns.

Just a quick "pop in" from me to say that, thanks to this thread (and the earlier one), I was not caught out last week when we got outside ready to go to work and the windscreen was covered in ice. I had already bought some de-icer - thanks to a suggestion in this topic - so just got it out of the boot, sprayed and we were on our way! So thanks all!!

Also, life with twins is ..... expensive and interesting!! Mine (boy and girl) are 2 years 2 months and it seems like they just eat any money we have (sometimes quite literally!! Boychild was found with a five pound note mushed up in his mouth the other day!). However, the love, laughs and inner glows more than make up for it.

Thanks for that.i'm going to give it a try i'm really impressed with how much warmer the candles are making the room.Might not be so good when it gets really cold i will have to wait and see.The room thermo shows it does heat up i thought at first it may have just been in the mind .
