Preparing for winter II

I bought DD some de icer last week which was much appreciated when her windscreen froze and a couple of days ago bought her a screen or cover for her windscreen .
Ordered a traditional clothes ceiling mounted dryer from amazon and got free postage- one at 1.5M for utility room and one at 2.1 M for the garage. I'm hoping that will give me more space on the new worktop over the washing machine and prevent laundry taking over the entire house.
Lunch yesterday was a disaster - the gas cooker which must be at least ten years old does not seem to heat up very well and despite doing everything right the meal was not nice at all. Looks as if we will need to bite the bullet, get it removed safely and replace it with a really good electric double oven (the top oven and grill does not work either). I pointed out to DH that I have had six months struggling with ovens that were old and wonky and I did not want to poison us all  Think he is coming round to the idea
Loft insulation topping has taken most of the space in the garage but we can't put it in the loft till the electrician and plumber have been in there to put in new shower in family bathroom etc.
Wonder if dh would like a trip to look at ovens later? Doubt I can get him out of the garden as he is like a dog with two tails at finally having a garden and garage after 21 years in a town house."This site is addictive!"

Half*rds are doing 3for2 on all winter chemicals at the minute - so we got the de-icer, pre-frost ice preventer, and a scraper for DH's car (cos his is awful but my H version worked great last year). We're keeping the de-icers just inside the front door so one bottle will do the 2 cars.
Roof comes off this week though, as we finally start attic conversion! It will help long term though. And can't be as bad as extension works 3 years ago when we had no back wall, no heating, and quite a cold November, all coinciding!
Already started using my thermals a couple of weeks ago - but dropped them again last week with milder temps again. And just after I bought DD a new HWB, she found the old one that I thought had been lost in various clearing operations! Will use that myself though.GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897

A few nights ago i decided to get out a pack of unscented candles ,i love candles and have usually got one yankie candle burning.Well there was 6 of these and i suddenly realised the room was getting warmer the thermo showed a increase of 4decs ,i used them again last night and even Oh comented it was geting warmer.when it gets really cold they may not make such a big differance but i'm off to get a good stock in ,it's worth a try.Does anybody else use them to help with warmth.
I use candles constantly, as soon as it's dark the lounge curtains get drawn and a few candles get lit - lovely and cosy. If you pick up some nice cheap glass holders (B&M do some nice ones) and use tealights it doesn't cost much and it's so cheerful and warm. I also lit a couple of my home made heating candles (made using remnants of old candles) in the kitchen this morning cos it was chilly and it soon warmed up.Hope is not a strategy.0 -
PS variation on a theme. I don't have any heating in my kitchen unless we light the Aga, which we rarely do unless it's really cold -otherwise the back door is open in January and we are all mafting! So if it's cold, i light a couple of tea lights under the oven rack and stick a baking tray on top - instant radiator!Hope is not a strategy.0

Bought the following in tescos at the weekend.
750g beef steak mince . 3 packs for £10
4 tins tesco value chopped tomatoes
£1 bag of carrotts (about 12 big carrots in the bag)
£1 bag of celery
Bag of lentils
4 value range onions.
Came to just under £14
From this i made 8 portions of lasagne.
A Large cottage pie
5 bags of bolognese sauce.
All homemade, sitting in the freezer and good for you too.
As we both work and are too tired to make the above from scratch when we get home its a great way to have something ready in minutes0 -
I checked my papier mache filler around my outside plumbing hole and its worked a treat. It isn't damp at all and has stopped a shocking draught into the kitchen...
There was me thinking it would be a hell of a job to fill it but papier mache (newspapers mashed with PVA glue) has done the job a goodun
Very pleased
Went and bought our winter boots today  A lot of money for 3 of us...
When I had the IVF and joked about wanting twin girls, I had no idea that girls boots cost so much!
I think I am in for an expensive time over the next ?? years!!!!!
:rotfl:

Went to Ikea yesterday and got a couple of the 99p fleece blankets, they are great also got new curtains ( not from Ikea) and the difference they make to living room is amazing.
I have candles on almost every night and find ones from ikea last really well actually bought some new ones yest as well:oIn 2009 i finally gave up smoking Have been smoke free for 3 years!!!!!!
Weight Watchers starting weight 12.6
Target weight 10st current weight - -10 st 7lb
Aim to be debt free by Jan 2013! not now just bought a house:D0 -
I soooooo badly need to go to ikea and get some fleece blankets and other stuff, but don't think all of it would fit in the car! Imagine if IKEA did free delivery online!!!:D
Also need to get a de-icer from the pound shop and a bath drain blocker(old one's broken~been wanting a relaxing hot bath with candles on for eternity)
Managed to get some BN gre ygloves on fleabay for £1.5x, need a matching scarf and I'm all cosied up!;)0 -
If you use de-icer then I would store it either in the house or the shed as when it does get really cold the keyholes will freeze and you may not be able to get it out of the car:)
I usually just pour warm (def not too hot) water over the windscreen and leave the car running as I seem to end up using a whole can of de-icer??0 -
hahaha
homemade radiator in the kitchen tonightA large baking tray balanced on two mugs, with 2 tealights underneath... The heat from that is quite suprising
Its not really cold enough to need it yet, but it was an experiment - will definately find it useful when it gets really cold0
