Preparing for winter II

There's been a definite nip in the air for the last few days,so I've just made up my bed with my winter (double) duvet and have placed a fleece over my mattress and under the fitted sheet. The fleece was just the right size.:D
I got the idea for the fleece from this thread, thanks again!Sorry,I can't remember who had the idea....0 -
CHILLOUT - I would complain and get them to come and do the windows again - don't put up with that0

hello :hello:
I haven't posted before - taken me ages to catch up on all the advice but Ive been taking notes and made a list !
Sorry if I missed this and its already been posted but if you have an outside garden tap or outside water pipes then this nice spell of weather is a good time to get outside and put some insulation round them. Dont forget to take in any hosepipes as well.
Had a terrible day last winter when my builders left the garage door open on one of the coldest days and pipes in the garage froze. Next day we woke to water gushing out under the garage door and a lake of ice forming on the driveway. Spent alot of time in the DIY store on a Saturday trying to buy items to fix it- everyone else was buying plumbing repair stuff too !:(
Keep those ideas coming everyone!0 -

I eat kale three times a day, never knit, and go to Mass twice on sundays.
I am just popping out to the garden now for some more delicious _pale_ kale and then I will get back on topic!
Back on topic - sorry board guides.
Chillout, I think you should complain too. You would have had better results if you got us lot round with our OS methods!
Valbuk, welcome and thanks for reminding me about the outside tap. Someone on here (I forget who) suggested I could drain the water out of the pipe since I won't need it for the winter.
Re putting up curtain rails and renting - not sure of the rules in the UK but it was in my lease that I couldn't do a thing without checking with the landlord first so it might be worth double-checking.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Oh good, another kale fan. We could share recipes.
jayneylane - if you do decide you want to put up curtain rails, it would probably be worth checking with your landlord / letting agent - I'm currently on my third rented place and none of my landlords have ever objected to me putting up curtain rails, as long as I was prepared to pay for it. If you have just a roof over you (rather than another flat), I would also suggest checking that you've got some insulation up there (if you can), and speaking to the landlord about getting something done if you haven't - my first flat had no insulation at all, and boy was it cold in the winter!
Chillout - I'd definitely be complaining in your position - the housing association have paid for that work, and I'm sure they won't be very impressed that it's been done to such a poor standard either. Good luck in getting it fixed.Back after a very long break!0 -

Brilliant, excellent video. Boy are you good.
A very timely reminder of what a harsh winter can be like. Those icicles hanging off the eves!!!
Yesterday I added a bag of Sain's basic salt to my shopping and chided myself for being so pessimistic as I did so.
After watching you vid... I think better prepare for the worst. I just hope it wasn't a premonition.
omg the icicles here were enormous for sure. I didn't make the video, but its fab for showing what our weather was like. We are quite high compared to the other towns around us, so sufer much more in bad weather than them. We can have snow down, yet if you can get out and off the mountain then 4 miles away will have virtually nothing...NualaBuala wrote: »Somehow I missed your link to the video Mamzie ... that's what I get for skim-reading. it looks so beautiful ... but must have been really tough!
It def is, loads of open spaces as the town is right on the mountains edge, fab for the dog and kids.mynameisnotmardatha wrote: »Hiii ! I am a new poster! I have never posted in here before and nobody knows me ! :A I do not live in Scotland and my name is em. em. Fred.Nice to meet you all !

Is it easy to make blinds ? Or to line existing ones ? I need something in the kitchen and bathroom but there's no room for curtains. I don't have anything up in the kitchen just now - and only a cheap thin Ikea white blind in the bog. Not overlooked so didn't really matter... but last winter got very cold.0

Mardatha,
Had the diverter problem myself a few years back and if you have a room thermostat you can turn it down quite a bit, although not off and still have hottish water. You may have to have experiment a bit till you get it right, but it may help till it's fixed.
Have lived in cobbled together houses all my life, can you tell?
The bog blind (that sounds well iffy LOL) I just used to hook a small lfleece over mine in the evening, on of the pram ones( pound shop) seemed to do the trick, hardly grand designs but no one cared in our house.

Hi Fred (lol)
I've made a number of roller blinds through the years, I've got 3 in my flat at the moment over 3 metre's long. Yes you can make them, John Lewis do the best kits I've found. Tip. If you want a tension roller blind, buy kits with a wooden pole not a metal pole those kits don't last very long. If you want one that rolls up as you feed through a beaded cord, it doesn't matter.
However, if you window is under 2 meters in depth, there are more and more ready made roller blind kits available and the price is falling all the time and it'll probably cost you more to make one than buy one.
If you want to stop drafts, you'll still need a curtain over the window cavity.
Hope this helps. Chillout5892
