It's freezing here today, so i'm trying to get back on track :T

I've bought thermals for myself (DH has some and said he didn't want more), and have a fleece blanket thing my mum bought us last christmas for the sofa (already used it i'm always cold :() I don't really need to store much food as it's only a 10 min walk to local shop, and i work there so i know all they ran out of this year was salt.

I've got a curtain for the front door (already had it ) and have bought a fleece from ikea to line it with, but i'm not sure where to put it (apart from obviously across the door :rotfl: ) the doors slightly recessed so the brick work is about a foot in from it, do i attach it to this or the door frame or door? Also it's the curtain track type (had wanted a pole but thought i should save money and use the curtain i've got ) so do i just buy the cheapest curtain track i can and cut it? I want to have it all prepared so i can either do it myself or there's not much for Dh to do as he keeps laughing at the idea :eek: and saying it's old fashioned. Think he's missed the point :rotfl:

    thanks for any help

Nice to meet you ... um Fred! What a nice sensible-sounding name you have. But we must put you to the test to make sure you're the real deal. Simply tell us 10 delicious ways to enjoy kale and why sweeties and sock-knitting should be banned. :D
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

  • I do not know what you're talking about.
I eat kale three times a day, never knit, and go to Mass twice on sundays.
I am just popping out to the garden now for some more delicious _pale_ kale and then I will get back on topic!

    Yes right, (Pinocchio) Mad Arthur:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    You're a pushover for kale;)

The vanilla candle smells delicious right now and the ribeye steak and chips went down a treat.:T

Another wee drop and we are off to bed.

    Have a good night everyone.

Hi there. Actually you can get pole. What you have to look for are curtain rings to fit the pole that have a little circular loop attached to them. Attach the pole across the brickwork in front of the recess. You put the pole up with the curtain rings on it, then attach the curtain to the curtain rings by hooking them through the hanging loops at the bottom of the rings.

I put this link in as it's the clearest picture of the kind of rings with dangling loops I can find.

    Hope it helps.

Meanwhile, I'm furious. I recently had new draft proofing put around all my windows by my housing association. I had to put the c/h on this evening. It's got surprisingly cold. Wintery cold, not just a bit nippy. So there I was locking the bedroom windows, as they probably won't be open until the spring if it stays this chilled, (north facing window, so very cold wall>) Looked down and the net curtains are blowing in the breeze. Had to tape over the window again.

What was the bloody point!!! This must have cost a fortune. They sent 2 people to do it and it took an afternoon. And I've just seen how they carved up the new paintwork which they really didn't have to do.

Am I the only one who expects a workmans work to be effective. I'm bloody furious.!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

As we rent, we can't drill into the wall, so I have bought a rail that extends so it fits into the space and my mum has given us a voil that she no longer needs. Hoping this will help a little bit, trying it in the spare room first and then if sucessful, I will go and buy another two for the main bedroom. Luckily our windows are double glazed but are very big, I think this is one source of loss of heat.

We don't have central heating, just storage heaters. Any tips on how to use these to the best/most economical way? So far today is the first time they have been on and we have had it on for an hour in one room with the door shut, we haven't noticed much difference yet...

    :)

Just because you rent doesn't mean you can't put up curtain rails - if you want to stand the cost. I suppose you have to think about how much not having curtains is going to cos you in heating and comfort against how much its going to cost to buy cheap curtain rails and curtains.

I remember when Hubby and I moved into our first home, it was freezing that first morning because we hadn't got curtains up! We soon had a cheapy rail up!

Incidently we had storage heaters in that house too and found that the colder the room the hotter the storage heater got. E.g. in the hallway the heater was always hot but the lounge one which was 3x bigger didn't get so hot.

What you need to do is charge them overnight but make sure that the "vent" switch/dial is turned down during the day or all the heat will leak out before you need it in the evening.

Ours was only a small, 2 bed terrace, albeit newly built, but at the end of the first year we were £120 in credit with the leccy company using storage heaters, so if you use them right you won't break the bank. :D We moved in in the October so spent our first winter experimenting and not really using the storage heaters correctly!

On another note - I am STILL waiting for my landlord's plumber to pay me a visit as my diverter valve (or something) is sticking, so whenever the hot water starts heating it warms up the rads too - so either I live with cold water or swealtering in the heat cos I can't cool the radiators down.
