I have the Sony PRS600 Touch - I love it, being a bit geeky...and I've not had to buy any ebooks.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

"Kindle" is the name of Amazon's e-reader machine. The Sony is called the Reader, and model number (eg, PRS-505).
I wouldn't go for an Amazon Kindle, because it ties you to the Amazon store to a degree. However, the simplicity of buying books is a plus for many people. Plus, it looks tacky.
The Sony Reader model are more stylish, and come in a few different colours.

With the Kindle I assume you're tied into Amazon's software. With my Sony I don't use any software - I just drag & drop.
Calibre is useful sometimes though.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

With the sony you can't buy ebooks from amazon and at the moment amazon seem to have the cheapest ebooks.
Calibre is useful to convert epub to mobi so it can be read on the kindle, as log as the file isn't DRM'd.
