I am now looking at the book I've got for the holiday thinking it looks really heavy, but alas the ereader is not compatible with swimming pools!

It is if you get one of those waterproof document/map pouches. They're about a tenner, but if you get the right one you can read under the water. :rotfl:

I'm becoming more tempted by the minute.

Which make of kindle would people prefer, Sony, or other manufacturer?

I have the Sony PRS600 Touch - I love it, being a bit geeky...and I've not had to buy any ebooks.

"Kindle" is the name of Amazon's e-reader machine. The Sony is called the Reader, and model number (eg, PRS-505).

I wouldn't go for an Amazon Kindle, because it ties you to the Amazon store to a degree. However, the simplicity of buying books is a plus for many people. Plus, it looks tacky. ;)

The Sony Reader model are more stylish, and come in a few different colours.

If you take a trip to this website, you'll find it a mine of information, and the forums have information on every machine used to read ebooks: http://www.mobileread.com/

    This is Amazon's Kindle:

Although how long the picture stays I don't know.

I prefer Sony over Amazon because you're not tied to any format or software.

With the Kindle I assume you're tied into Amazon's software. With my Sony I don't use any software - I just drag & drop.

    Calibre is useful sometimes though.

  • With the sony you can't buy ebooks from amazon and at the moment amazon seem to have the cheapest ebooks.

Calibre is useful to convert epub to mobi so it can be read on the kindle, as log as the file isn't DRM'd.

    Who pays for ebooks?

I read Tony Blair's A Journey this week and it was worth nothing.
