Go to Amazon and browse the Kindle store, there are thousands of books available (even Tony Blairs book is already a Kindle download). you can search by genre, title or author.

    How heavy is the Kindle?

Can you read comfortably in bed with it?

Is it waterproof so you can read in the bath?

I would say that most, if not all, of the current e-readers are no heavier than a paperback. I've found reading in bed to be much easier on my Sony Reader, because I only need to use one hand to read. I can lie down in bed, and use one hand to prop (and operate) the e-reader on my pillow. It's the height of laziness! :D

If anyone has a Kindle3 there's a "early preview release" update (3.0.1) from Amazon:

Thanks for this - some books are free on the .com site but you have to pay for them on the UK site. To be able to access both will be great.

Lots of free books here as well http://www.gutenberg.org/

I had been toying with the ebook thing and eventually took the plung and bought one of these http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/14545934/Sovos-SVEBK5B-5-inch-E-Reader-/Product.html

It has a slightly smaller screen than the kindle @ 5" - and is back lit LCD. Which dramatically reduces battery life (About 7 hours)

The reason i chose it was that it can also be used to play movies and display photos as it has a colour screen.

Used it for the first time last night and spent about 2 hours reading, and did not feel any eyestrain from the backlit screen.

I think there is also a deal on at John Lewis for them that includes an accessory pack too.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

I got the latest Kindle delivered last week, I am impressed thus far. I was surprised at how slim it is - it's the same height/width as a standard paperback but the depth is only a few millimetres. It's easy to use and the screen is brilliant.
Download a dozen books, then put the Kindle on a table next to 12 real books and ask yourself why you would want all that bulk stored somewhere! Plus the Kindle stores hundreds!
Not for everyone, but if you're willing to give it a go you won't be disappointed.
Very good value at £109 too.

Hmmmm....I'm tempted but then what will I do with all my bookshelves?

Also would it be sturdy enough when I throw it at the cat when it misbehaves (the cat not the kindle) ;)

Maybe keep a couple of paperbacks for ummm....'sporting' activities?!:rotfl:
  • I have a Sony Pocket Book (PRS 300 I think) and I love it. I download a book from the library and read it at leisure, don't have to go and get one, don't have to take it back, and I have quite a few sitting on my ereader for when I can't find one I want in the library. I do find myself going to turn over the page though. I also got a case with a light for it off Ebay really cheaply. I am now looking at the book I've got for the holiday thinking it looks really heavy, but alas the ereader is not compatible with swimming pools!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
  • I've been using a Sony Pocket Reader for a couple of months. Brilliant! The page turn and screen size trouble me not one bit.
If you know where to get free/cheap music you'll have no trouble finding ebooks on the same basis.
My geeky side is a little green about the Kindle's wi-fi, web and mp3 capability, but if truth be told, I doubt if I'd use them much anyway. The sheer simplicity of the Sony is a good feature - my netbook does the rest much better.
