Today I bought the Sovos mentioned above.. Very impressed with it as it plays my avi files and has an 800 x 480 screen.

£79.95 from John Lewis or online

I've read through all the pro's & cons of Kindle v Sony thank you all.

But I have one or two questions as I'm not very Techie minded (& blonde).

If I had a Kindle 3G Wifi, in addition to reading 'books' will it be any good in the UK and/or abroad to connect to the internet to read my emails if I'm in a suitable 'Wifi' area?

(My mobile phone isn't up to the job & I wont have the luggage allowance to take my laptop)

Hope this is the right place to ask or should I be in the Techie thread? TIA

Another question - does anyone use an ipad as a book reader or is it too big?

I find the size OK. I use it for both e-books and e-magazines. In landscape mode it is comfortable, actually about the same size as an open book.

Waiting for my Kindle to turn up. Any recommendations for a good and (cheap) Kindle cover or case. The one Amazon is selling I find quite expensive.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

The e-paper is not good for sites with lots of moving stuff (like ads or animations or news sites!!). But since most web-mail sites are static it's good for reading.

I use it on gmail, it can take a bit of time to load up (you can use the basic HTML Gmail site for faster loading!). but it's readable if you put it in landscape mode..

Not tried it on things like Google Docs yet! but should work but will be VERY.....slow.... ^_^

Just to say, I bought the Sovos and it's the best ebook reader I've ever tried. I didn't bother with play.com - I went to John Lewis, played with it, and bought it there and then. It is £10 cheaper online, however

Part of the problem with the Sony for me was the e-ink and its legibility in low light - I had to have a bright light behind me.

With the Sovos I can turn the brightness down, have a white on black background and this suits me a lot more. Also it seems to have a fast Chinese processor inside and it's much quicker than the Sony at going in and out of books, zooming and reflowing pdfs etc.

The music player has actually pretty decent SQ on flat - I have a Sony X and a Sansa Clip+; and it seems to play any movie I throw on it, which is a bonus.

So, I live and learn - I'm selling the Sony Touch, I can live with reduced battery life for all the above benefits.
