Spanish is likely to be the main language on board, which could be a problem if you like quizzes/activities etc.

Looking for advice as a first time cruiser. Holidaying in the US and will be in Miami on 16th August and was thinking about booking a week cruise on the new Norwegian Getaway. Am I better booking now through a UK agent or leaving it as late as possible and booking through vacations to go or the like? There will be three of us going, two adults and 12 year old daughter. Any tips from experienced cruisers welcome.0

I can only tell you what we do. We book after the 90 day window for final payment. In the US you can cancel a cruise up to that date without penalty. If you go onto the cruise forums you will see people with lots of upcoming cruises in their sigs, they may take a couple of these and will cancel the rest. This means that the bargains are out there then.
A caveat would be that you will have less choice when you want a cabin for 3, but that said, we have never had an issue.
We always book via Cruise Compete a US site where you input the detail of the cruise you want and agents compete for your business. Often they will throw in onboard spend. We got $900 last year! Pay by credit card and you will have no problems. You are also then covered under the US terms to get an upgrade/money back if prices drop, not guaranteed after final payment date has passed but often they will do it.
Another tip is to sign up for Cruisefish, it tracks the prices of any cruise you put on alert and emails you when the prices drop. It costs about $5 to join but it is invaluable for knowing when to press the button and book. We have saved a lot using it. It also means that once booked you can get onto the TA and ask them to get you a reduction if the price drops.
This site allows you see to see what cabins are available and then you can ask your TA to try to get that for you.

Interesting post Poet and thank you for the seascanner web site which is rather interesting. I had been looking for this type of thing since reading about it on Cruise Critic although, as you are probably aware, they don't allow web sites to be published. Don't really understand why if it helps the cruising community, but there we go.
Are you aware that you can book through them and if you are have you used them before? They appear to be extremely competitive and are beating the American TA's by a mile on a cruise we are currently interested in. Also, they only require a 10% deposit and full monies by June 10 on a cruise which leaves July 11th???? This is the bit I can't get my head around as final payment date is usually 90 days. Don't want to get my fingers burnt, they are in Germany and all contact is via email. What do you think? Thank you - sally0 -
Cruise critic is not there to help the cruisers.
It is a commercial website that is only interested in the money.
thye suppress posters that want to make complaints or point out some of the truths about cruising.
seascanner, used them for a princess cruise with no issues.
The german site is often cheaper with extra OBC.

I think that if you pay by credit card you should be fine. I just use them for swapping cabins if I see one free that I fancy.0 -
Thank you very much to getmore4less and Poet. Your contributions are very much appreciated.
As an update, we have booked using a credit card. The email response was absolutely first class and if communication is anything to go by then we should be OK. Hopefully the Euro-£ will continue to rise, thus making a really decent purchase. Thanks again. - Sally0 -
