Self-scan supermarkets - arggggh

  • I detest these things and will not use them for anything but the smallest of purchases. . I recently wrote a letter of complaint to B&Q when they introduced these in my local store and had no operators on conventional tills. I am not a technophobe, I work in a technology industry, but I cannot see any advantage to these self service tills, a trained operator will be more efficient than me at scanning items.

I always use them, even for more than 25 items if needs be.

I pick things up, scan them and put them on the shelf - not hard - does not take ages so I dont get told
that I have to place it there.

Admitadly if I have some 4 packs of cola I have to wait a sec while it realizes that I dont want to bag it
but I have not had the sort of problems people are saying.

I can also operate a computer, a VCR, DVD player and drive a car - self serve is easy compared to some of those :D

meh I find them ok. The only nag is sometimes I'll scan an item and put it in the bag, for it to still say "please place item in the bagging area. I'll have to give the bag a shake or pick it up and put it down again.

If I'm buying over say 15 items, I'll use a manned till, or if I'm buying alcohol among other things I will, as it can take a few minutes in busy periods for someone to come and tell the machine you're 18, depending on queue sizes it's faster just to use a manned till.

many of the 24 hour supermarkets have no manned checkouts after about 11pm, just self service with a tired, bored looking person overseeing.

I sound like I'm anti-supermarkets, I'm actually not, just anti-incompetence...I like a mooch round them and my Mum works in one!

but if they wont/cant get the staff to man the checkouts after 11 then what else can they do,

My local Tesco Metro has upped the number of self scan machines. There are now 14 of them forming a corridor, 7 on each side. The problem is that they are never all switched on whenever I've been in - there's usually just a random couple active on each side, and for some reason the green light on the pole above each machine usually isn't lit so you have to walk up and down the aisle to find the available machines.

A minor gripe, but it's a bit embarrassing if people are using the machines and you walk down the aisle trying to find a free one and have to walk back to the end a bit sheepishly if they're all taken ;)

Tesco, ensure the green light is on above the active machines please so that we can see when they are available!

Hate these things, hate using them, hate working with them, and when customers moan/complain I usually agree.

I'm sure there was an article somewhere recently where they went round all different store and worked out the average time of waiting in a queue and having your goods processed by a cashier and using a self service and the majority of the time the cashier was quicker, no surprise really.

In the shop I work in, there can be massive queues at all the checkouts and noone will even use these, can't say I blame them.
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.

Well I love em! My pet peeve is the:
"would you like any help with your packing"
"no thank you" then they start "helping" stuffing as many tins as possible on top of your bread grrrr Asda are the worst for this & is what made me stop shopping there, was so fed up of asking them not to pack & getting home with squashed bread or burst yoghurt over all my shopping!
Self serve means I can pack my bags how I like it & how my cupboards etc., are organised, much easier to put it all away & I love playing shops lol
I have always relied on the kindness of strangers

I like these machines when i have one item to scan, but even then i have problems like when i let's say buy a bottle of vodka and i still need to prove my id or wait till the woman who runs the self scan tills to come and varify my age. It's especially annoying when there are loads of people going through the same time.
