Finding clothes for skinny child

  • My DS has a long body and is skinny. Nostly his clothes come from Next or H&M which, though I sometimes resort to skinny jeans. I've also found Dunnes not to be too bad, though its hit and miss. I hate that blooming around the bum lol XD

my little girl is 6 i have to buy adjustable waist for her or take her trousers/skirts in she has just gone into some 5-6 clothes for the length in the arms and legs but they are still too big i find uniform a problem most of her clothes are still 3-4 and 4-5 so it can be a nightmare i would have to say the same for trousers skirts etc take them up and in

  • I wore a lot of Gap Kids and M&S stuff as a kid and was super small. Hope this helps. :)
  • Matalan are brilliant for skinny boys. Both of mine are tall bean poles. They might be similar with girls.

My DD1 has this problem too, she is really tall as well so just makes it more tricky. Was great when she was in nappies as we used washables which are bulky it meant we never had a prob with trousers fitting over the nappy. Now though it is a nightmare. Added to the fact that she won't wear a belt as it is too fiddly for her to undo herself when she needs the toilet and she refuses any help with weeing!

Like others have mentioned we find H&M great, Gap occasionally, and Next I find hit and miss, they are either great or really huge. I had one pair of 'xoxo' brand jeans and they fit perfectly (I was handed them down, but think they can be pricey) TK Maxx is good as quite often the designer labels come up small too.

It is worse as they get a bit older. My youngest is soon to be 13. He is really skinney but not tall just average. He weights just under 5stone and has a tiny frame. Adjustable waists just leave bunched up material around the bum area so look awful.
Everywhere seems to cater for larger kids even doing special ranges for chubby ones but only m&S do one style of slim fit school trousers and i even have to take in the waist on those.
For out of school he wears topman xsmall skinney jeans which fit in the lenght but he even needs a belt with these and they cost a fortune to boot:mad:.

Another vote for H&M here! I like the jeans from Next but they just don't fit my DD's shape (except for the odd pair here and there, but good luck convincing a 3yr old to try on endless pairs of jeans just to get one pair that look ok!) and they balloon out like she should still be wearing a nappy. The '&' ones from H&M are the best fit I've found, and she's also got a pair of Matthew Williamson Butterfly ones that are quite good (from Debenhams). She's not particularly skinny but has got long legs, and most jeans that fit in the leg are miles too big on the waist and hips.
Sadly her younger sister is the opposite build with relatively short legs so not much good for hand-me-downs!

It is worse as they get older. DD is a stick, an almost 13 year old stick who has (as DS's girlfreind puts it) Limo Legs.... i.e her legs stretch forever. School trousers are a nightmare, what fits in her legs buries her in the waist and hips. The best I have found for her age group is New Look.

On the plus side she is a model so I suppose it works in the long run lol
  • Gap definitely come up small, I've just bought a fair amount for my dd who is very skinny, but has just shot up a bit, so the 18-24 months jeans she had been wearing were too short. She's also 4.

She has a couple of pairs of next jeans, the skinny jeans they also do in slim fitting fit her really well with only a minor adjudstment of the waist band, so she doesn't end up with a load of fabric at the back, and that's wearing an age 4.

I've also found that the Butterfly range is quite small fitting, like someone else mentioned, and we also have a Mexx outlet here, where the clothes don't fit great but do shrink nicely if tumble dried. They only seem to shrink once, and fit her ok after that (plus they are cheap, so not a huge loss if they shrink in the wrong direction;))

Give up on trousers generally, my daughter will wear leggings under a dress but in all honesty she's happiest when I let her just wear the skirts or dresses - she never seems to get cold and just looks all legs
