Thanks Tim. I've ready some of your posts and they are very helpful.

We had a go at our local store (non major one) today. I have thicker skin then my partner but even I struggled to go on the mattress for longer then few minutes! The healthbed seemed very good but I understand you cant really tell from few minuts of trial.

We might go for Kozeesleep's ortho pocket - they seem a good quality and my partner gets back pain so it might suit us best

The Orthopocket is the firmest pocket sprung mattress in Kozeesleep's range, and is also right at the top of their range as far as spec goes.

    Hi

Anyone got a Komfi bed? If so could you let me know if there have been any problems?

The base will probably be the Eco model and the mattress the fusion. Does anyone know how much room is under the base? is it sufficient for the under bed storage boxes?

    Thanks

I've never tried one, but from their design they appear to be one of the most gimmicky mattresses on the market (possibly with the exception of 'sleep to live').

The Fusion that you are interested in has 10cm of memory foam, which is double the optimum. Memory foam is only there to mould to your body, and provide even support, without causing pressure points. 2" (5cm) is enough to do this, and having any more is pointless. It won't give you any better support, but instead you will just sink deeper into it. This can engulf you preventing your body's natural cooling, and making it a hot mattress. It will also make it very difficult to change position in bed. The reflex foam lyer won't allow air to circulate under the memory foam layer as well as springs would. So this can add to the overheating even more.

Many bed manufacturers are coming out with all sorts of gimmicks to try and make their mattresses stand out from the others, in order to charge high prices. Unfortunately Komfi have gone too far the wrong way. The Zen range is even worse, with barrel shaped peices of foam instead of springs.

They should be good beds looking at the construction. However I don't think that they are that good to justify the very high prices. I think they are aiming at the 'more money than sense' market.
  • Can I muddy the waters of this already complicated subject...

We're in the market for a decent 5' pocket sprung mattress. Ideally different tension each side (which narrows it down a fair bit). I have 2 questions about longevity:

    1. do better quality mattresses last longer, or are they just more comfortable/supportive/luxurious while they last (I'm thinking Vi-Spring in particular here: will that eye-watering price difference translate to it lasting longer?)

    2. I quite like the pocket sprung/latex top mattresses I've tried (e.g. Millbrook does a couple). But how well does it last? Better or worse than other quality natural fillings (e.g. a horsehair/lambswool/cotton combo)? I don't want to end up sleeping in a big rubbery dent! I know there's latex and there's latex, but assume I can find good quality natural latex.

Apologies if these are answered elsewhere; I've not been able to find the answers if so.

If at all possible I would steer clear of mattresses with different tensions each side for two main reasons: 1) They are made with two seperate spring units joined together. So you can end up with a ridge in the middle where the two edges meet. 2) Most people don't like changing sides of the bed. So it will restrict being able to turn it, which is very important for the life of the mattress (especially with pocket springs).

It's more a case that poor quality mattresses won't last as long. Anything from average to top quality should have a similar life, depending on spec and how well you look after it (turning etc).

I used to have a Vi-Spring before I was in the bed trade, and I didn't think it was anything special. In fact I actually replaced it with a good quality open coil sprung, orthopaedic mattress, which I preferred. So I although Vi-Spring are good quality as far as the big brands go. I don't think they are worth anywhere near what they charge for them.

As long as it is natural latex (not synthetic or a blend), and it is a deep enough layer, then it should last just as long as the springs, if not longer. You really want to be looking at around a 2" (50mm) layer of latex to get the real benefit. And turn it on a regular basis to make it wear evenly and last longer.

Anyone come across "Dura Beds" ? They seem to sell mostly to the trade/companies so don't even have a website to find out more info (I called them).
Anyway they seem to do a range of low-price pocket sprung mattresses (I need 3x singles for the kids beds as they're all a bit threadbare but dont want to break the bank) - any opinions please??

    Sorry for highjacking thread OP!

They appear to make mainly low end budget beds.

If you are replacing kids beds, then you would be better off with good quality open coil sprung ones.
