I always found blackberries near railways, I am NOT saying it is safe to go picking them there! The men on the railways claimed they were planted there to stop folk getting too close, but I think they were telling me porkies, I was only a wein. I did love going blackberry picking. But we call them brambles.
Disused railway lines are good if you have them? (We have them everywhere because of the coal mines.)

Usually if they are out in the open the birds get them. There's lots along the fields here but we wont pick them cos the dogs will have pee'd on them.

    was probs true...

back *dan sarf* we just used to pick ones higher than labrador height :rotfl:

    I'm in the North East

Ah, OK....was only wondering because you have the same name a someone I know, who has also had a little girl recently!

Last year our Blackberry's were fabulous and wre still going strong at this time of the year, this year they are rubbish! Nowhere near as many and they have all shrivelled already:( Gutted because I really wanted some this year.

I am thinking of planting a few fruit trees in the garden....you know the mini kinds that are quite small. I don't know if they are any good though. I just wish I could grow bananas:rotfl:

I went to a park nearby that has a kind of 'pathway through the woods' thing going on - a lot were in there along the path. Also found huge quantities next to the wooded stream type of area, too. It is getting a bit late for picking, as a lot had already gone off (or whatever you want to call it), but there were a few red ones as well so still some time. Next time will come armed with gloves, though, as the best were a bit further back into the growth and my poor arm is covered in scratches! :p

But along those lines, where's cheapest/best to urgently acquire self-sealing jam jars?

eta: Susan, my uncle did that too! How funny!
