Just got back from blackberry foraging (inspired by GISI's bounty) and managed a large mixing bowl's worth before Finn got stroppy in his pushchair. Now I have my legendary blackberry pie in the oven, a large pot of cream and cannot WAIT for after dinner :D:D. Not to mention a huge bunch of blackberries leftover so I think I need to acquire some jam jars very shortly or get to baking lots more!!
I'm glad you mentioned that as I need to go and pick ours. (They were growing wild in the garden when we moved in and we haven't quite tamed the whole garden yet.)

  • Where does everyone get these wonderfull blackberries from? The ones that grew round here seemed to die off a couple of weeks ago... And they were quite sparse to start with...

Good luck with your Mum tomorrow Tia... :)
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • The blackberries here are in abundance but so are the wasps

I hadn't picked them for two weeks so lots of ours have gone over. I think good blackberry years and good apple years must correspond as we hardly had any of either last year but this year we're so overloaded with them that even in normal circumstances I would be struggling to keep up with them. We have about 8kg apples sitting outside in lidded buckets waiting to be dealt with because it's cooler there than in the kitchen. I think I've done about 5 kg already. Blackberries are easier because I just have to wash and freeze.

They grow in our garden but most of ours are given by other people (freinds and OH's customers). The apples all come from other people. Maybe your area is having a bad blackberry year though.

I always found blackberries near railways, I am NOT saying it is safe to go picking them there! The men on the railways claimed they were planted there to stop folk getting too close, but I think they were telling me porkies, I was only a wein. I did love going blackberry picking. But we call them brambles.

Usually if they are out in the open the birds get them. There's lots along the fields here but we wont pick them cos the dogs will have pee'd on them.
