Sorry if I appear thick. i've downloaded hijack this. After the setup wizard finishes, how the heck do I open it to start running the checks ?

Borrow/buy an external hard disk or flash drive, backup, restore to factory settings, if the drive still doesn't work, take it back to the retailer and ask for a free fix under the sale of goods act.

If you have enough sd cards, you could split the backup, but external hard discs or dvd's provide a better long term backup solution

    Could you explain this please?

As the laptop is out of warranty what does the sale of goods act give you?

    Thanks very much.

(I ask because my sons £600 lap top is two years old and the charger socket is not working)

Only if you post the hijackthis log ;)

soga as amended says goods have to be of satisfactory quality, and have to last a reasonable amount of time, so even if they are out of warranty, you can ask the retailer fix, replace or compensate you if something doesn't last because of a manufacturing or design defect.

Providing he has treated it well, the socket should last longer than 2 years, it's a common problem.

  • Nope. I'm sure its not me. When I try to open hijack it simply goes to install every time. Have tried a few different avenues. My laptop has severely had it. I'm not going to throw it out the window yet, will uninstall and try again. PMA
