Help! Please help me with slow dying laptop

hi everyone
It would be wasteful of me to buy a new laptop when I only got this one Jan 2009! Plus, I can't afford it!
It's running really slow and it's so annoying. Also the disk drive isn't working - I put a disk in, try to open it and it opens the drive telling me to insert disk.
Someone I know 'serviced' it some time ago, added a 'z' drive to it (?) and it just isn't right. I had the same thing on a desktop some time ago, and someone who knew how to format the thing took it off and sorted it out, he kept it! I'm not being so generous with this thing though!
Basically I'm not sure what to do and any help at all would be hugely appreciated. I can save / read from an sd card so will I have to backup to there before doing anything?

first off, back up all your data using whatever external means possible. Then post the spec of the machine. Then, run Hijack This and post the log.

backup your data and reinstall windows using the factory restore partition or disc.!!

Hiya, in a word no because I don't know what I'm doing. you know what its like, I could google this stuff and get a virus from them if I've not a clue so I'm happy to have recommendations, thanks for this post!You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt

Happened to my laptop. I nicknamed her Bertha, I give a quick pray before booting her up and offer her a gentle stroke. She's a stubborn mare but I haven't yet resorted to domestic violence - just a touch of verbal abuse. She doesn't realise I've got a younger model lined up to move in next week!
