Hiya, in a word no because I don't know what I'm doing. you know what its like, I could google this stuff and get a virus from them if I've not a clue so I'm happy to have recommendations, thanks for this post!

Okay, if you can first tell us what make/model the laptop is.

Download CCleaner-Slim from the bottom of the page in the link......

    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

Download it to your desktop and then open CCleaner-Slim and click on the "Analyze" tab, once it has finished click on "Run Cleaner" tab.

Download the latest version Malwarebytes from here..........

    http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Make sure you download the latest version which has the green downward pointing arrow and says Download
    Latest Version

    5.87MB

Once downloaded open Malwarebytes and update it first before running a scan.

Once the scan has finished post the log file in your next message.

Happened to my laptop. I nicknamed her Bertha, I give a quick pray before booting her up and offer her a gentle stroke. She's a stubborn mare but I haven't yet resorted to domestic violence - just a touch of verbal abuse. She doesn't realise I've got a younger model lined up to move in next week!

Edited to delete what is probably on retrospect bad information!

Please listen to people who know what they are doing - apologies, had too much red bull!

Maybe we can take a look at Bertha later. :)

Well it's either that or a long walk off a short pier for her! I am getting another one so at the moment all she will be used for is a storage machine for photos etc. At some point I would like to clean her up, get an external hard drive etc but I'm not sure what's left in the old gal.

Anyways that's another story for another thread!

backup to DVD's and/or get an external hard drive, restore to factory settings can be done using acer erecovery (after you have checked the backups work)

    hi everyone

It would be wasteful of me to buy a new laptop when I only got this one Jan 2009! Plus, I can't afford it!

It's running really slow and it's so annoying. Also the disk drive isn't working - I put a disk in, try to open it and it opens the drive telling me to insert disk.

18 months old and in home use. Just about prime time for the cooling fan and heatsink to be blocked solid with fluff

God all this help! Thanks so much!

Can't save to dvd as the drive isn't working.

Can only save to sd card but the ones I have aren't big enough ( 4gb ) and it doesn't give me option to save to two or three.

So, only thing I can see is to save to an online backup place, then carry your advice

Yep, 18 months old! I use the thing all the time so would forgive it for giving up, but would blame the people that sold me it for selling something that doesn't last very long!!

Kidding, no blame just really need to fix it!!

    Cheers guys
