Borrow/buy an external hard disk or flash drive, backup, restore to factory settings, if the drive still doesn't work, take it back to the retailer and ask for a free fix under the sale of goods act.

Won't get one. The retailer isn't responsible for the OP filling it full of rubbish and not maintaining it.

Just human nature/horseplay. No malice aforethought.

You should be happy that they are falling over themselves to help you. ;)

Donnie, I am so so happy that I'm getting this help - I wouldn't have known where to start! It's great you all can banter with each other, a real 'community'

Even if you weren't planning to wipe it, defrag is a waste of time ;):). If you are planning to wipe it, it's a complete waste of time.

If you don't want to wipe it, cancel the defrag, and post a hijackthis log now, then run a malwarebytes FULL scan, and fix anything found

haha it can get somewhat 'heated' in here, probably why certain other area's of MSE get a little scared, but we do always try to help

    anyways as others have said

    CCleaner
    Malwarebytes
    Hijackthis

i personally feel the above 3 (with a little help interpreting the information) can sort out most problems with windows

defragging is generally a contentious thing however i am generally of the feeling that it doesnt ever hurt so is worth trying, yes in a lot of cases it wont make much difference but in some case's it can (or is at least reported as having made a difference)

as for online back ups, hotmail actually has 25 gb of free storage incuded with it yes you are limited to 50mb files and you are also limited to only 200 files at a time (if usings internet explorer - 5 if using any other browser) but for free storage its not bad, also please remember using online storage will use any download/upload bandwidth so bare this in mind, also also if you are uploading photos be careful the automatic settings will actually compress your photos making them worse quality remember to set it to original (top right hand side of the box) from 1600
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

OK, order to do things. CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW, THEY TAKE YOU DIRECTLY TO THE DOWNLOADS:

    1) Download CCleaner
    ....

    4) Download IOBit Smartdefrag
    ...

Once you've done that, you should have something running at a speed that we can then start optimising properly so post once you've done it.

    Hi Hammyman

Have done that, ran a few times and it took a few mins to do the last one and did 10 defrags

Thanks, do I have to do anything now?

Have also run ccleaner, as advised by Fiddiweb & Gonzo however don't want to do hijack this as still trying to back everything up. Have decided to do this over ftp to my website space

hijackthis takes seconds, the sooner you do it, the sooner we can look at the problem. malwarebytes can run while you backup

It's probably because people on here are 'problem solvers' and are used to thinking/acting quickly, they can get frustrated if progress is slow.
    Move along, nothing to see.
