So, to sum up, a perfect wedding day means different things to different people. And a good job too, or they'd be flipping boring to attend!saving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.

Planet earth. You are so defensive, and the last comment you made there is spiteful and unneccessary. No it's not. You are in debt, have made foolish decisions regarding money, and aren't planning on even proposing till next year. Some people here will be in debt, but really want to get married, so will get married on the budget they are happy with and can afford, whether that means cheap rings, or no meal, or wearing something they already own. Some people don't want to wait to get married, because they don't need all the bells and whistles so long as they have each other. Isn't that the whole point really? Some people already have children, so won't want to blow loads on a wedding. I haven't told anyone to do anything - you don't seem to get that though.
I think we will just have to agree to disagree here. My original post was nothing to do with what happens after the wedding, i.e. if that couple splits up or not. So the fact that someone you know split up after having an expensive wedding is irrelevant in this sense, unless you are making a connection between the two. I could say I missed the bus today, and I had toast for breakfast. That doesn't mean I missed the bus because I had toast for breakfast. Your point means nothing, because you're not connecting them - I hope you understand what I mean. You were talking about waiting longer to save more money to have a bigger and better weddings. I along with others said that a bigger and better wedding doesn't always mean a better marriage. That's it.
Thanks to those that managed to reply without being spiteful. I suggested spending a bit more as opposed to the staunch tactics of a moneysaver, which some can't accept. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and mine is that I want to have a lovely memorable day for my partner and I and my guests, even if that means spending a bit more. Don't you think WE ALL want that? What we are saying is that it doesn't mean you have to spend lots of money on the best of everything to have a day like that!!! I'm sorry if you took my post as a criticism, and it's a shame some have had to make comments like those above.
Good luck to those getting married; I hope you have a wonderful day

Even in the evening when the DJ/band appear and it turns into a drunken mess? That's entertainment!

Jesus, you are hard work.
I guess you could ignore my comments, instead of feeling the need to constantly replying.
And you still felt the need to post the patronising comment on the end. How very, very sad.
(Hope your wedding goes well though
) Getting married to a wonderful lady on August 10, 2012.
Need to save up, lose weight, reduce my money worries and get back to being the real me! :j0 -

My monster in law will be like that from the start. She made a show of herself at the get together meal last month so why should her only sons wedding be any different!
My wedding is my wedding. If other people don't like it (mil) they can get lost. I am not paying for a drinks package primarily because the mil has already said she is going to get completely pie-eyed! Not on me she isn't!0 -
I dont wish to sound harsh , but having had 2 children get married in the last year , £10k wont go far
Ours is costing around £5K, but that is everything. Didn't realise it was that much till i totalled everything up.I guess you could ignore my comments, instead of feeling the need to constantly replying.

I guess you could ignore my comments, instead of feeling the need to reply to them too.
And that wasn't a patronising comment at all, as weren't getting what I've said so I've had to repeat it numerous times, which is hard work.
Thank you for your last comment though
(And No, I'm not being sarcastic!
)
Oh, I meant to say, have you actually discussed with your OH about what kind of wedding she would like? Your idea of your wedding may be the other end of the scale to what she would like. What if she would like to get married abroad, just the 2 of you?Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0
