Given the significantly higher merchant fees for Amex I think the cashback is probably sustainable in the short term - it may even become a positive factor in their marketing if many people switch from other cards.

Unfortunately I do not speak for Amex on this matter....

Welcome back to the fold Gal :)
I chatted with a retailer last week who refused to take my AMEX...she said that AMEX charge a whopping 6% for every transaction, compared to the standard 3% charged by other cards. So they can easily afford to pay up to 2% and still make a killing. I cannot verify the accuracy of this info' though

    ;) Hi d_s,

Tell your shopkeeper to try again, as 6% is a normal opening gambit by CC co's. I know Barclays try that figure on small retailers first. It's called maximising revenue.
The big boys like Dixon group can bargain down to 1.5%
and small shops end up at around 3% depending on turnover.

If Amex want to expand and I think they do, they are going to accept the going rate eventually or stay put.

I think they have realised the UK has possibilities for them, and want to drop the old , though lucrative U.S. charge card image.

Boots and Kingfisher will have to be persuaded, I wonder if that will be sooner, rather than later?
    Watch this space.

I'm on a crusade to be able to pay my council tax with Amex.

    Regards Scat

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
May be of interest to frequent flyers?
But you can also register for points with plat card.

1 point per £1 spend, which can be transferred to a lot of other Airline milage points cards, including bmi, virgin etc. HOWEVER membership costs £23.50 a year, so the choice is yours.

Are you sure this is possible? I have called up american express and they say it is not possible.

    Thanks

    Hi Scat,
It's unlikely I'll be back there for a while, it was a specialist motorbike shop and I don't have a motorbike anymore (I was running an errand for a mate)
What you say doesn't surprise me, but the wee woman behind the counter didn't look like much of a negociator :)

    Trying out a new wheeze...

Using my AMEX for CD wow purchases.

    1. Use a money off link (there's a £1.50 one availible at the moment)
    2. Use a voucher - I've been using the footy predictor ones but there is a link that gives you a 50p of voucher knocking about
    3. Use $ to pay - I managed to get a £8.99 album down to £6.49 and then pay $11.45 (which should be about £6.18)
    4. Get 1% cashback - ok only 6p but hey, how much are cd wow getting out of it? (free p&p as well)!

Not sure how AMEX deal with $ (think they are ok with it from memory, they should be?) but at this rate its not worth downloading the music!

Lucky - I nearly had to enact my catchphrase....

...you would not believe the number of people who say it doesn't work!
