First of all can anyone spot any flaws in the logic?
    No seems to make sense
I use capital one because that is genuine cashback rather than vouchers plus you get a free Equifax service, but if you can definitely use the vouchers than I guess it makes sense.
And secondly do you need to keep using the Amex card occasionally in order to get the final cashback in a year's time?
I'm not aware of any requirement to use it.

Just a quick question, I have an amex card and have just finished with the 3 months at 5% introductory offer. I would estimate I have about another £6k that I will spend on credit cards this year. I've done the sums and it seems that I'm best off using my M&S mastercard (1% back via M&S vouchers which I can use for Xmas gifts) than using my amex card since a good portion of the amex card will be on 0.5%. First of all can anyone spot any flaws in the logic? And secondly do you need to keep using the Amex card occasionally in order to get the final cashback in a year's time? Any help much appreciated.

M&S is 0.5% back via vouchers, though (1 point for every £1 spent at M&S, 1 point for every £2 spent elsewhere). Unless of course you were planning on spending £6k at M&S... :)

Aha I had a feeling there was a flaw somewhere in my logic but it turns out the flaw was in my memory :) so basically in M&S best using their card but anywhere else that takes AMEX it's six of one and half a dozen of the other probably....thanks!

Well I have just had a call from a chap called Tim at Amex - it would appear that when I made my last payment I was £1.04 short. I took the opportunity of asking him about the repayment protection insurance that they insisted I took out when I had the card and told him that I hadnt wanted it - he told me that I would get a full refund from the insurance services section - so I shall get writing.

Cant see why they are quibbling over £1.04 though it isnt as though I spend on the bloomin' card nor am I about to leave the country any time soon:mad:

After applying for the card, we received a phone call from them asking how much we would spend on the card each month, so we said £2000, so why on earth did they only give us a limit of £1100??? Hmmm let me think, is it do with the 5% cash back on the first £4000 in three months. What a con! I have to keep checking the amount spent, so I can tell DH when to use his Cap One card instead to avoid the embarrassment of it being declined.

I too spoke to a Tim at Amex! Did he say he was a 'duty manager'?

I have noticed on the Amex site that they charge £300 per year for the platinum card. Is that correct?

Not for the Platimum Money Back card, maybe for the Platinum charge card?

well im closing my american express card as soon as they settle my little argument ( long story i have posted else where but basically i bought $300 worth of goods form an american seller not trhu ebay but using paypal and she skeedaddled. paypal have recovered $2.24 and say there their obligation ends as that is all the funds she had in her account, amex say cos its a paypal transaction its not covered under the cca "section 75" im now writing to them to complain) also the free flights are a con too, you have to pay for at least one nights room as well and the cheapest "free" flights are also form main airports only - i could spit at southamopton airprot form my house, why oh why would i go all the way to london to get a flight i can get here
