Amex decided to not take my DD.
I didn't know until the following month when i saw a late payment on my credit file !
I phoned them up and they said sorry, for some reason the DD got suspended, they refunded the interest and the fee... will they remove the late payment strike on my name (now my account is in credit !).0 -
I have to say I'm in agreement with appleseed on this - I've had Amex platinum for around 6-odd years now and always had better customer service, query resolution and general all-round goodness from them. Long may it continue
Also, I got mine originally for a LOB transfer deal, and since I paid it off I keep getting repeat offers once or twice a year. Last one was just before xmas.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
How long does it take from application to the card arriving? I applied on the 30th December. 10 working days later the form asking for proof of address turned up and I sent it back two weeks ago. Last week, my utility statement was returned, but still no amex...0

I have just cut up my Lloyds TSB airmiles duo cards, because the American Express card causes so many problems. Tried to use it in Asda, Morrisons and Tesco. All rejected it. You can't easily use it online as it doesn't have the usual valid from and to dates. You do get double the airmiles on the Amex card than the TSB Mastercard, but the hassle i experienced was not worth it.0

As others report Amex is the most 'civilised' card in terms of getting someone to talk to in UK when there is a problem; getting late payment fees credited back (as long as you have a reasonable excuse like memory lapse, or blame Royal Mail!) and there's no reason why the stores you mention should have rejected yours as I have used it in all these. A lot of the majors who used not to take it have now given in (Boots, John Lewis). Where an online payment requests 'from' and 'to' validity dates the 'from' is not compulsory.0 -
I can only report what I have experienced in the last 3 days. In tesco, for example, it was rejected at the tobacco counter, then rejected twice again at the ordinary check out, then retained by the store, who were following their rules, presumably based on the number of times it had been tried.
It is a pity, because I was thinking of getting an Amex card for cashback benefits as I always pay off my bill before incurring charges.0 -

I have reorganised myself now: been approved for a Capital One card (because of the cashback and because I pay off everything monthly), and a Nationwide card because it doesn't charge for overseas use. The Nationwide application on line actually asks you if you want to set up a direct debit, which I've done.
Thanks to all who replied with help.0
