  • I received my card this morning but the documentation says I only get 3% cashback in the first 3 months - there is no mention of a 5% cashback!
  • I applied for the platinum card 10 days ago and haven't had anything in the post saying whether I've been accepted or not, but I have had an email saying 'please now register your card online' etc etc. Do you think the letter's lost in the post or should I be suspicious of the email?! I'm very paranoid...

Also does anyone know what kind of credit limit they offer? OR does it vary entirely from person to person? I have a £2000 limit on my Mastercard (no balance at present but I do use it every month) and no debt.

I think your best option is to call Amex and clarify if the card is on its way or if you've been rejected, etc. You can never be too sure these days with identity fraud, etc.

I just got my cashback for the first year of an amex platinum. I made a point of getting up to 10,000 pounds of spending to get the full 1.5 per cent cash back on the lot. But you only get 1.5 percent on amount ABOVE 10,000; you get 0.5 per cent on the first few thousand, added to 1 percent of the next few thousand up to 10K. On about 10K of spending i got about a hundred pounds cashback, including introductory offer cashback rate ie about 1 percent overall. So unless you are spending a lot more than this, use for first 3 months at 5 per cent, but don't make a point of using it after that; same as other 1 per cent cashback cards overall.

That ain't no swiz Tubster. It's doing exactly what it says on the tin. Why do so many people come on these boards and say there's a rip-off when they just haven't read the terms and conditions? Do your homework, and don't complain when you haven't checked the detail. It's your responsibility.

And it's also detailed in the Best Cashback Card article. Very well worth a read.
  • Like Julies82 above I too have applied for the 5% card but the documentation only says 3%. After a conversation with a very snotty AMEX employee - "we dont do a 5% cashback card" ! they have agreed to look into it (why dont they just look at their own website?) and will write to me in 3-5 days.

What a ridiclous situation to be in.

Julies82 - have you had any further from AMEX regarding this issue?

Exactly the same happened to me, the documentation I received stated that the cashback was 3% for the first 3 months (even though I applied for the 5% offer). I called up Amex customer services and the amex guy confirmed that my account was set for 3% for the first 3 months. Luckily the amex guy was on the ball and correctly noted that I'd applied for the card during the 5% offer so he was able to update my account for the correct cashback deal.

I thought this must have been a one off that my application had been incorrectly processed but exactly the same thing happened to my sister-in-law. When she called up amex her conversation was less successful and the amex customer service guy she spoke to stated that they didn't have a 5% cash back deal - take a look on your own website Amex!!! Her issue is currently being investigated by Amex.

I applied for this card today, via quidco, who are apparently offering £10 per application.

There is notification on paypal about Amex payments being charged as US DOLLARS.I almost got caught out with that too!.If i was you, i would just get a cashback card cos at least you can spend the money you earn wherever you like. With airmiles you have to spend a lot of money to get a "free" flight. Its proberly cheaper just to save money in a piggy bank

This is true but if you check the top of the bill where the credits appear there should be an amount credited from PayPal to cover any charges. All you need to do is compare the amounts to make sure you're not out pocket.

By the way a free flight, no matter how long it's taken to earn, has got to be cheaper than using your own money!
