Just noticed under the T&C that I maybe eligble for the 2% rebate after 12 months, which works out at £154,

are you refering to the cashback on the platinium card @ 2% once your spend is over £7500?

Just to clarify the above, you are correct there is no "cashback" facility on a credit card like there is on a debit card.
I was referring to the annual spend on the platinium card when this exceeds £7500 Amex then give you 2% of your total spend in a credit to your account on the anniversary of you opening the account.

    sorry for any confusion caused..

    Hi Guys,
I've had a Blue card for nearly 18 months now, and believe that after this year, I will be better off with a platinum card - spending should be greater than >£8000 PA.

My question is, how easy is this to do, will I need to go through the whole application process again, and cancel the blue card etc etc, or is there a method to 'convert' my blue accoun to a Platinum account?

I did ask this on my last call to them, but lets just say I didn't get a straight answer - one of their suggestions was that I could have a Blue AND a Platinum card  Okay then.

I feel sure that some peeps on here must have changed cars, so if you could share your combined wisdom with me it would be very much appreciated!

    Kind regards

    Dan

    Daniel,
At present I have a Blue Card and I recently applied for a Platinum. You can have both. Although you may depending on your credit score only get a smallish limit on the Platinum. You can switch lines of credit between the cards though. You can also close Blue if you want and transfer all the credit line to Platinum.
  • Just had my first statement through for my Amex Platinum Card. They initially charged me a Transfer Fee of £40. Then credited it back 10 days later without me having to call them about it.:j

    Result!!!!
    Debt Free!!!

A couple of years ago i converted from the Amex Gold c/c to the Platinum version which in theory seemed very easy, but in practice was not. Maybe it was a one-off and they have since reviewed their working practices.
I converted by phone to their main customer service centre clearly stating that I wanted to upgrade from the gold to the platinum. Yes, you have to go through a complete new application process. A few weeks later I received my new platinum card with a credit limit of £1000 !!!!!!!!!! When I called them to query the low limit they stated that as I already had a gold card (limit £7500) my platinum limit couldn't be raised. Realising their error it took them another 4 weeks to sort everything out by closing the gold account, increasing my platinum limit and transferring my old account to new. Not very professional !!!!

The moral is you can have two cards, but expect one with a relatively low limit or emphasise very strongly that you wish to convert from one to another. Either way I think they'll still class it as anew application.

My OH and I have been using Amex Platinum for a while now, just to take advantage of the 2% cashback feature.

Since we received Chip & PIN cards, we have had a problem with a few retailers where the card reader gives a "Card not accepted" message.

We always check that the retailer takes Amex cards before offering the card. Our account is paid off in full every month by DD and we are well clear of our credit limit.

We have contacted Amex who could not shed any light on why this was and sent us out new cards to try to cure the problem (this was a pain as the new cards were different numbers and so any suppliers who had our card details had to be informed of the change of card number).

The new cards seem no better than the previous ones.

The problem seems to have no pattern. This afternoon it was not accepted by Next, but then was used successfully at two other major retailers subsequently.

The problem is usually cured by the operator swiping the card/keying the card number, but this will not be an option after Feb 14th and we will have to revert to a second card, and so will not get our 2%. _pale_

I will be re-contacting Amex this week to discuss, but wondered if anyone else has had this problem?

Exactly what I said two posts above yours :)
  • Just got my Amex Platinum Credit Card today. Offers sounds good, but when say i go to book hotels for example the rates are not available! The 2%cash back is good, but are there any real benefits?

I am going to be taking a few holidays this year, and benefits such as room upgrades e.t.c. I was told how wonderful the platinum credit card is, as you get upgrades e.t.c. Anyone care to share what hotels, airlines e.t.c

    Many thanks in advance

The ONLY benefit is the Cashback - There arn't any others with this card. You're thinking of the Platinum charge card which does have hotel, airline, car hire benefits attached to it, but at a premium of £175 per year (well it was last time they invited me to have one).
  • hi, dont know if this is the right area, but I have not been credited with my nectar points from Amex, how do i go about chasing them up?
    thanks
