  • Hi guys,

I apologise if I am asking questions that have already been asked, but 32 pages is rather alot to trawl through!

I am looking at a cashback card, my expenditure is easily high enough for the platinum. I have a few queries though.... will most merchants accept Amex? My yearly expenditure wouldnt be half as high on it is I couldnt use it for groceries/petrol etc! How does one pay off the balance? When does cashback get paid?

    Thanks

    Adam

Actually, dont worry.... Amex say they charge nearly 3% on foreign currency transactions. Since a good deal of our expenditure will be in this way, we'd end up losing money on those deals, so I'll have to find another cashback card

There is a long thread on the CC board with places people have reported that accept and don't accept Amex. You will find the majority of the larger retailers will accept Amex, but less so with smaller retailers, meaning in reality you do need a backup non Amex credit card.

You can pay off the balance same way as any other card - DD, through their website or cheque.

Cashback is paid on your card's anniversary.

Most cards make a charge for foreign transactions (normally 2.5% -> 3%) - there are a limited number who don't - and it basically comes down to Nationwide who also offer cashback. However, they don't offer it for foreign transactions! So finding a cashback card which will do both would be tricky.

    Hope that helps you.

I have never had a credit card before, but after watching MMR am looking into it.

With the American Express Platinum card it says you must earn a minimum of 20k, is this this before or after tax? Also can you include any other monies you receive, ie child benefit & tax credits?

    Thanks for any advice.

Perhaps he meant spend and not pay off? I'm amazed that Amex aren't talking legal action!

He didn't say never to spend on a Platimum Amex.

He said that the best low rate balance transfer card was the Platinum Amex, but to never ever spend on a card you've transfered a balance onto.

You need to make a purchase using the card before 31st December in order to qualify for the extra points. I got my card through yesterday and am doing the same thing as you, so I'm going to try to get out and use it over the next couple of days!

just had a look on the web site link,
they have changed it so you only get 1000 pts for signing up and another 1000 for purchases, so it looks like there is no 6000 pts take a look at this link,,

12.90% 56 days Receive an additional 1,000 bonus points via Moneysupermarket

Leave Feedback On This CardNectar Credit Card - Our Opinion
As well as offering 5.9% p.a. for the life of any balance transfers, this card also gives you the opportunity to earn Nectar points at the rate of 4 points for each £1.00 spent. In addition, new applications are credited with 1,000 Nectar points and if the application comes via Moneysupermarket a further 1,000 points are added to your balance.
so its looks like it became to popular
