    Hi
Sorry if this has been asked before, I can't find it on the thread.
If I use my Amex Plat credit card at the supermarket and pay an extra £20 to get "cash back" from the till, is this counted as eligible spend for Amex cashback, or will it be counted as a cash advance, incurring immediate interest at the cash advance rate?

There is no way this can be done. You cannot get cashback from a supermarket till using a credit card. You can only do this using a debit card.

If you "cancel the agreement" within 14days American Express will refund your money and the £20 fee.If you cancel the card after the 14days you only get your money back and they keep the £20 fee.
I am cancelling my card tomorrow I'll then be £60 cashback better off.
In practice the cashback isn't paid until next year on my account.I can wait.

I was worried my other half would be getting cashback at the till and incurring "charges for cash advances"
As quoted above it is only allowed on debit cards..Amex have confirmed this as I phoned them sad I know..

I think this is a great idea and I will be trying it with my new Amex Blue as I want to get up to the £2000 asap (and maximise spending in my first 3m of course).

Bokken, please let us all know what happens when you actually cancel it and confirm that they let it go through to your current account. Is it definitely treated as a purchase? How did you check that?

raptorz, is it all travel agents waiving the £20 fee at the moment or just one firm in particular? Suppose it doesn't matter if you get that back too per Bokken's post.

Thanks guys, really hope this works!

I thought Amex used to not charge BT fees. (I have an old Blue card from 6 or so years ago)

Just called them & they told me it's now 2% or 40 UKP which actually is about equal to my saving in moving there..

I notice on the marketing flyers & online in my account there's no mention of any BT fees.

    Is it negotiable? (expect not!)

Well as planned the nice lady at American Express has refunded my money to my UK bank account and it will arrive within 10days not perfect but a SBT none the least.
I just wait now for the purchase(money was purchased from my Platinium card)to show on my statement and as long as my 12mth spend exceeds £7501 the above SBT will be classed as a 2% purchase ie.£60.
This should also apply to the Amex Blue obviously the overall spend needed is lower.
The lady at customer services also gave the option of leaving a small amount on the Travellers cheque card rather than cancel the card completly. This is a option for next time as it may speed up the loading and unloading of the card as you wouldn't have to apply and wait for another card to arrive in the post.
This amount left on the card should be as low as possible though or your purchase will generate less cashback.
Hope this helps you guys out .
As for me I'm off now to do it all again.

AFAIK its first choice and thomson. if you are thinking about keeping the card you also get $50 or €50 free on transactions of $700/€700 or more. :)

I wouldnt do it this way if you are cancelling the card completely as it might get more complicated with the refunds as the money is taken in the shop and not directly by american express.

Ordered mine today by phone - it seems that you can get the fee back as part of cancelling the deal if you order by phone/online but not if you buy at a shop.

Managed to confirm this and also that it's a purchase, but couldn't confirm that it could be refunded to my bank account - she didn't get what i was talking about but at least i won't be out of pocket even if that doesn't happen.

Thanks again guys, looking forward to £60 cashback!

    Mmmmmmmmmmmm your missing something here.
Why are you thinking of only £60 cashback???
There is an opportunity to get at least £60 per month, double if your limit is high, triple if you have a limit of at least £9000.
You are not limited to one card you can have several cards all loaded to the max if your limit is reasonably high.
If I were you I would look at the Platinium card instead of the Blue. There are some restrictions on this card so not everyone may be able to apply.
If this is not for you then look closely at what you do have and try and think outside the box that these credit companies are trying to keep you in.
    Good luck..
Ps ordered another Traverllers cheque card and loaded it.£120 in a month magic!!!
