Ordered mine today by phone - it seems that you can get the fee back as part of cancelling the deal if you order by phone/online but not if you buy at a shop.

Managed to confirm this and also that it's a purchase, but couldn't confirm that it could be refunded to my bank account - she didn't get what i was talking about but at least i won't be out of pocket even if that doesn't happen.

Thanks again guys, looking forward to £60 cashback!

I don't think it will matter where you buy your "cheque card" from but if you telephone this American Express number you can cancel the "agreement " within 14days they will refund the £20 fee and whatever you loaded on to the card.

Have your sort code and account number ready ,there is of course a 10-15 day delay before the funds reach your account. But this has to be balanced against getting a SBT of up to £3000 into your account and the % gained on your Americain Express card.

    Mmmmmmmmmmmm your missing something here.
Why are you thinking of only £60 cashback???
There is an opportunity to get at least £60 per month, double if your limit is high, triple if you have a limit of at least £9000.
You are not limited to one card you can have several cards all loaded to the max if your limit is reasonably high.
If I were you I would look at the Platinium card instead of the Blue. There are some restrictions on this card so not everyone may be able to apply.
If this is not for you then look closely at what you do have and try and think outside the box that these credit companies are trying to keep you in.
    Good luck..
Ps ordered another Traverllers cheque card and loaded it.£120 in a month magic!!!

Looks like you're doing well out of this Bokken!

Certainly don't intend to stop at one time around, just meant £60 return was great for the 10 mins work it took me! Only have just over £3k limit though so can only do one at a time. Assume around one per month should be achieveable.

Would probably have gone for the platinum had I known you could do this, but at the time I thought I might struggle to reach the £2k spend.

Currently waiting for the card to arrive so I can cancel...
  • My sources tell me American Express will be closing this loophole very soon by forcing the refund to be applied against the credit card or making the transaction on the credit card treated as a cash advance.

I've also heard that they are retroactively looking at making Travel Card loanding ineligible to receive cash back (like balance transfers).

Either way, the free ride won't last much longer....
  • Thanks for that cheerful note

Mine arrived today, have activated and will cancel first thing tomorrow and make sure it goes into my bank account - the T&Cs that came with it definitely say this is possible for the time being.

Fingers crossed they don't do the retrospective ineligibility for cash back!

Just phoned to cancel and they said they could only refund to my credit card! Said I would think about it, and will try again later to see if I get someone different, but not hopeful as he had to check which makes me think they've been told not to do it.

He did ask though if I'd paid by debit card. I told them that I'd paid by credit card but perhaps I should say debit next time? But that would be lying of course...

    Any advice?

    Hi
I left it a couple of days before cancelling and then said "my circumstances have changed I'd like the funds returned to my current account"
The Lady I spoke to said "I can return it to your Credit card"
I mentioned I had checked the T&C's and that it would be more useful to be returned to my bank account.
Be polite but firm.Just gently point out the T&C's and have your account detail ready.
try again and let us know how you get on.
  • There is the option to have the funds sent to the American Express office/shop for collection ,noticed your in London this may be a option.
I haven't read up on this as it wasn't a useful option for me to use.
  • I'll try again this afternoon and see what happens. Then I'll try again on Monday if necessary!

The T&Cs don't say anything about it having to be the same method of payment as you used for purchase, so I think I have a case but perhaps they are cracking down on this? Took ages to be put through to cancellations, it seems they are very busy, I wonder why...?

Wasn't very impressed with the guy in cancellations actually, he was very brusque and told me that "Basically you have two options", ie keep the card or have it back on my CC, "so which one do you want then?"

Hopefully I'll get someone nicer next time.
  • Oh yes, forgot to say, I ran through the other options (eg getting a cheque) and he said that it HAD to go back to where the funds came from. So not sure he would have accepted sending funds to an office either.
