    Cancel the card immediately after receiving cashback (either spend it using the card or ask to be sent a cheque) seems the obvious answer, don't know if that works though.
  • Can anyone help?
    I am in dispute with American Express about the moneyback I earned on my Platinum card. When I took the card out early 2004 the Moneyback tiers were;
    0.5% up to £2000
    1.0% for £2001 - £5000
    2.0% in excess of £5000

    from the 1st October 2004 those rates changed to;
    0.5% up to £3000,
    1.0% for £3001 - £7500;
    2.0% in excess of £7501

    The moneyback was credited to me on the statement after the first anniversary of the card. I queried it because it was not as much as I was expecting. American Express have said that my spend in the first 3 months of the card was doubled to give "bonus points" these were credited at the pre- October 2004 rate. The remaining eligible spend was credited at the post- October 2004 rates even though much of it was spent before that date and before I was notified of the change in rates. To add insult to injury the bonus amount has been deducted from the eligible spend taking it just below the £7501 threshold. They also told me that I had been credited with "a manual adjustment of 500 points on my October statement to counteract the difference between the two tiered systems".This effectively means that they gave me £5.00 to save themselves considerably more.
    I fail to see how American Express can change the terms, I consider myself to have entered into a contract that they have reneged on. Has anyone else had this experience?
    Is there any recourse to the Banking Ombudsman?

    Any help/advice gratefully received.

    Just thought I'd mention the fact that amex are not very clear about the cashback on their website.

    It implies on most of the pages about the blue card that the current cashback is 2% for the first 3 months.

    What you will actually get (according to customer services and some of the amex web pages) is double cashback for the first 3 months - so its actually "up to 2%". in other words you get 2% on any amount over £2000 in the first 3 months.

    So that's why I've ended up with less cashback than I was expecting. :rolleyes:
  • I had a similar problem with another card company. Finding sensible advice on the net was a nightmare.

    I got some useful links at https://www.gold-creditcards.co.uk

    Anyone found any other useful info resources?

    Hi

    Could someone who has been through the process of registering for an Amex card help me.

    I registered online yesterday and have today received an email with an attachment that they are asking me to print out, fill in my address and sign. Then send off via freepost to an office in Brighton.

    I am just a little sceptical about this email considering all the con emails you get nowadays concerning bank accounts etc.

    Is this legitimate? Do I have to fill this out and send it to the address?

    Also, it asks for a reference code that I supposedly got when they sent me a confirmation email. The only thing is I didn't get a confirmation email and I certainly don't have a reference code, which again, leaves me sceptical.

    Could someone talk me through the registering process.

    Are you talking about registering or applying. That seems pretty normal if you're applying for the card. Amex's European head office is in Brighton.

    Having had my blue card for a few months, what happened to me was that for the first 3 months, my 'moneyback eligible spend' was doubled so, in the first month say I spent £500, my accrued spend for moneyback was £1000. In the second month say, I spent £600, my accrued moneyback spend is now £2200 and so on. The AMEX statement doesn't show your moneyback eligible spend (mine doesn't anyway) but this is available via the AMEX website if you register for online access and go to new charges.

    Yes that is how it works. Print out the form and fill it in. You should have got a reference code. If not, apply again or give customer services a call...

    I have recently been given a Centurion card, and Amex just put the cashback owed to me from the Platinum into my bank account. No probs at all.
