  • Yip. A bit 'zealous' I would say.

Just received my new Platinum Amex card the other day after protests from my wife that it's the 3rd Amex card I've had in about five years as I keep getting a bit 'fed up' that so many places DON'T TAKE IT. But I am determined to persevere and the temptation of 2% cashback (eventually) has tempted me away from my Smile Visa card (I will try and not think how unethical Amex is - could there be a more direct embodiment of rampant unethical-ness?!)

some bad news I'm afraid :(
I've just received a letter from AMEX advising of a change to their Platinum credit card T&C's..

The cashback will now be calulated as follows:
Up to £3K spend earns 0.5%
    From £3K - £7.5K earns 1%
    £7, 501+ earnes 2%

this obviously changes the annual spend required to make the Platinum better than the Blue.

Before the T&C change, it was worth upgrading to a platinum if your annual spend was in excess of £6K (after the introductory offer in year 1)
however now, it's only worth upgrading if you will spend over £9K
    very sneaky >:(
edit> I've just read here that Blue now only pays 0.5% cashback, if this is the case can you let me know as the above calcs will be wrong (it still says 1% on their site)

The cross over point from BLUE to PLATINUM is £8000 pa. At this point, you will have earnt £70 money back with either card. Above £8000, the Platinum card will give more moneyback because the Platinum will be paying 2% but the Blue still only 1%. Below £8000, you will earn a little more moneyback with the Blue card because the 0.5% band is £1000 wider with the Platinum card (we are talking a maximum of £5 moneyback here!!). However, the Blue card does have the nice 2% for 3 months introductory offer to help you get past the first £2000 band. :):)
  • aside - i have the british airways amex which if you are concerned about air miles is great. not so good for cashback etc.

1 air mile every pound, more depending on the retailer
3 for evry pound with ba

if you spend £200 a year you get double. i travel a lot on ba and use my card to get miles and has worked well.

it seems a good deal but i am sure someone can tell me something to the contrary.
  • Hello,
Just had my first cashback through today For my Amex Plat card and surprise surprise it was £30 less than it should have been. I know they have moved the goalposts recently but I had gone through the (new) £7500 barrier some time ago. I phoned and before I could finish my sentence the young lady said she would credit the £30 straight away! Now I might be an old sceptic but is something going on here? I'm sure everyone who frequents this board will check but of course not everyone will. :o
  • A very strange request, but does anyone have a postal address on the back on one of their bills for American Express's customer services?

I have been through their website and cant find one, just phone numbers and I want correspondance with them to be in writing.

    Any help gratefully appreciated

  • I've had my Blue card for a couple of weeks and I love it. I'm using it instead of my Switch card to earn the cashback, and I like the look on cashiers faces when I present them with an American Express. I must be a snob!

Does anyone know how many people in the UK have Amex? Is it quite rare?

Amex is the only company I have dealings with who have their call centre in India. And I have to say, they're always polite and helpful; far more so than Freeserve!!! And the statements are sent from the States!

I'll give it 6 months, then i'll apply for a platinum card!

Hi, I have just changed from the Amex Blue card to the Platinum. Just be careful about the rebate – I got mine in month 12/13.
I had pre applied for the Platinum card which took a little sorting as Amex don’t seem to like you to have two Amex credit cards and on the call centres advise held off from returning the Platinum card acceptance form until I had the Blue card rebate (apparently the offer of the new card is valid for 6 months).
I then cancelled the Blue card and they consolidated the account, and increased my credit limit on the new Platinum card – all very efficiently done.
  • go for it!
