if you log in to your router, on the wireless setup somewhere there's normally a drop-down box to choose what type you want, i.e. B only, B/G mixed, G only, B/G/N mixed, G/N mixed, N only...pick G/N mixed and your netgear dongle will work
                        ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Been trying to log into my thomson router all day
Everything I have read states that you do the following
1. enter 192.168.1.254
2. User = Administrator
3. Pass = leave it blank OR enter ser #
Not been able to access it and i dont recall changing any passwords when i set it up
So i cant even get over stage 1 of prepping the No1 router let alone getting No2 done0 -
Channel 11 is usually the one with the least users on it as opposed to 1 & 6 which tend to be the default channels .

Morning, On your pc which (in the lounge) works ok start a command prompt (start run cmd) enter ipconfig and look for default gateway in the ouput. That will tell you if 192.168.1.254 is your router address, also check what the ip address is for you pc in the same output. Then lets see what happens from there4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . can i just ask who is your isp and how long have you been with them.....as another poster said the wireless router you have is kak......if you have been with your isp for more than a year, phone them up and ask for a new modem router,if they refuse ask for your mac code, tell them your going to another supplier who will give you a more uptodate router for free, they will probably then offer you a free router to stay.....in true MSE tradition saving some cash.....i have read all the replies in here, but to me the most obvious thing to try is a better model of modem router with a stronger wireless signal......this could be an easy fix, without over complicating things with wireless repeaters and the like which can improve the signal but can slow the speed down.
one poster said move the existing router to a mid point between the 2 pc,s...sounds sensible to try it to me....a router doesnt need to be conected to the master socket as long as the extension socket wiring is sound..you only really need to try the master socket if your have problems getting you router to sync at all0
