Crap Wireless Connection - HELP Please

I have a computer in the lounge that i connect wirelessly via a Netgear WG111T to a thomson TG585

My ISP is plusnet and although we only manage a very low 3MB max download speed, when it is connected to the lounge computer the signal is very good

When I try to connect it using the same Netgear WG111T in the bedroom the signal comes up as very low or will not connect at all

The router is in the lounge

I desperatly need help in getting the connection set up better that will allow me to work upstairs

Can anybody help please

Ok. It really depends on the type of building you have. The position of the wireless modem is very crucial. Sometimes the signal can bounce off somewhere and get absorbed. Strange but true. Try pointing the antennae to a different direction from the ADSL modem (if you have one). If not, the next crazy idea is to get some aluminium foil and use this as a deflector. Use the foil to point the signal towards the room. This will improve.

As this is horrible and horrible looking, your best thing is to reposition the modem to another room (like the hallway) or buy a better modem. Alternative get an extender for the signal.

    or get a better antennae:

  • Try using inssider from here. Its free and it will tell you what signal strength you see (put it on both puters) Also look for your router in the graph and see if there are others using the same channel. Post the results on this thread eg db strength for your two pcs and also which channel you are using and if there are others around. Plus which windows use use and version and preferably the wireless card in each. Channels 1 6 11 are favourites but I use 13 (but that depends on the wifi card/router)

  • You can get an ethernet cable for a few quid and hard wire from lounge to bedroom going outside through window, and inside through window (or route it internally). Wireless is not always best in every home plus wired networking is far more secure.

    Works for me!

It looks like your walls etc are really blocking the signal, as Savvy says ethernet will help immensely, Homeplug or equivalent will help at a cost , directional antennae might help but not guaranteed to solve. I would suggest cat5 cable as the cheaper option , or a homeplug (will work generally in any room in the house and is portable but it does cost a lot more) Moving the router may help if you have enough slack in the cable (rarely happens though).

  • Have you got a phone socket half way between ? If so try your router there .

It's not either pc or the operating system, it' the laws of physics - you just happen to have thick walls/something in the structure of the house that's attenuating the wireless signal a lot before it hits the bedroom.....higher-gain aerial for your router as above will prob sort you out :)

Not a good idea, unless the halfway socket is the master socket, should keep the router plugged in at the master socket....better with a wireless access point (sometimes called range extenders) halfway between the two...and cheap as chips, saw some around £12 somewhere recently....
