  • This is a very cheap meal, used a lot on the slimming world diet, but don't let that put you off, its delish, if you like chip shop curry you will love this.

MUSHY PEA CURRY (serves 6-8, just adjust amounts to make smaller or freeze the rest)

    3 x tins mushy peas
1 x tin of baked beans
    1-2 onions
    mushrooms (optional)
    curry powder
    water

Method: Soften chopped onions and mushrooms, empty peas and beans into a pan, add enough water to gain right consistency (I like mine thick) add curry powder to taste, as spicy or as bland as you like, I do about 3 table spoons. Stir and heat gently for about 20-30 mins. Serve with home made chips or rice or 1/2 and 1/2. It is lovely, although it looks manky, trust me you will not be disappointed.

You can make this as dear or as cheap as you like, by down branding, using value, beans and peas.

    HTH:)

  • I have remembered a dish from a previous recession (80's?) when times were hard. There was a programme on tv about how people were coping and managing to feed their families.

A lady who had a hubby and 2 or 3 hungry sons (all unemployed) said she made a dish, sort of a hot pot really, from corned beef sliced thinly and layered with potatoes and other veg and stock. To make it even more filliing for them she used to cook yorkshire puddings to serve with it.

I know corned beef has shot up in price, and you may not even liike it, but I thought it was worth a mention.

Hope things are going well for you. :)

Bramble, sainsburys do mince for 97p(im sure other supermarkets do the same)-I feed 5 plus baby on this as spag bol, chilli, meat balls, cottage pie-if you bulk out with grated carrot and other veg you should get 2 very substantial portions-eat one freeze one.so for £7.76 you would have the main ingriedient for 16 meals. Veg can be bought v cheaply frozen-maybe 4 bags at a pound each-would last a month easily for 2. Potatoes 99p a bag would last 2 weeks for 2 if kept in fridge-add baked beans-sainsburys doing an offer 8 tins heinz for £3-theres 8 meals. Bag of pasta 99p tops plus 4 tins of tomatoes(80p max) slab of cheese(£3) theres 4 meals. Extras needed for mince meals-maybe another 80p for tinned tomatoes, £1 for onions(you can buy a frozen bag from farmfoods that will last ages) and I dont know how much milk you use but farmfoods do 8 pints for £1.50-say 24 pints at £4.50, and hovis loaves 2 for £1-say 8 loaves at £4. Bag of porridge oats £1 ish for breakfast. For lunches, cheap tuna(29p a tin in sainsburys) x4 added to pasta, could also make jacket spuds (add another 99p to be sure you have enough) Another £1 for butter/margarine. As you have eggs on tap, eggs on toast and omlettes aplenty too. I reckon that would see you through.

    That all comes to £34.99

    Hope this helps

    EDIT:Tomatoes actually 33p a tin-sorry-add £1.04 to total-comes in at £36.03
